Georgia Opens Season With 7-0 Win over Furman

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- The third-ranked Georgia Bulldogs posted a 7-0 win Friday night over Furman at the Mickel Tennis Center in the season opener for both squads.
Georgia (1-0) started the day by winning the doubles point over the defending Southern Conference champions. At No. 1, Georgia's Agata Cioroch and Evgenia Subbotina defeated Mary Kovarik and Caroline Bentley, 8-5. Georgia's Lori Grey and Tina Hojnik beat Natalie The and Marti Morris 8-0 at No. 2, while Alexandra Smith and Jennifer Hodge edged Furman's Krista Thomson and Mary Neill Hagood at No. 3, 8-7 (4).
Georgia then went on to sweep the Lady Paladins in singles action. Cioroch, the nation's top-ranked player, earned a straight-set victory against Kovarik, 6-2, 6-0. Nguyen defeated Hagood at the No. 2 slot, 6-1, 7-5, while Hojnik claimed a 6-0, 6-1 triumph at the No. 3 spot against The. Grey also won in straight sets as she defeated Furman's Shannon Moore at No. 4, 7-6 (8), 6-2. At the No. 5 slot, Subbotina upended Furman's Shellie Cochran 6-4, 6-3, while Lady Paladin Marti Morris was downed by Smith at No. 6, 6-1, 6-0.
