Kilgo Named to Ray Guy Award Watch List

Athens, Ga.---University of Georgia senior punter Jonathan Kilgo has been named to the preliminary list of 34 candidates for this year's Ray Guy Award. This award is presented annually to the nation's best collegiate punter.

Kilgo, a native of Silver Creek, Ga., was selected as one of the 10 finalists for this award last season and named All-SEC Honorable Mention by the Associated Press after finishing the regular season third in the SEC and 15th in the nation with an average of 43.7 yards per punt. He also had eight boots of more than 50 yards and dropped 10 of his punts inside the 20-yard line. Kilgo had an outstanding performance in Georgia's 26-24 upset over Tennessee (Oct. 6), averaging 42.3 yards on seven punts, including a long of 63. In the game, he dropped three punts inside the 20, including two punts at the one-yard line.

A national selection committee will choose ten semi-finalists who will be announced in late October. The same national body made up of sports writers, college football coaches, sports information directors, former punters and members designated by the Greater Augusta Sports Council, will then vote for the three finalists who will be announced in late November. On December 12, 2002, the three finalists will travel to Orlando, Florida for the Home Depot College Football Awards Show, with the winner being announced and presented with the award live on ESPN.

The Ray Guy Award winner will be invited to Augusta, Ga., for an exciting two-day celebration, including the Greater Augusta Sports Awards Gala, the Ray Guy Kicking and Punting Academy, and community appearances.
