Szabo and Sammons Named Freshman All-Americans

ATHENS-----University of Georgia second baseman Marshall Szabo and catcher Clint Sammons were named to the 2002 "Louisville Slugger" Freshmen All-American teams by Collegiate Baseball, the publication announced Wednesday.

Szabo, who batted .313-6-26 in 48 games including 39 starts, was one of six second baseman to make the first team. He joins Eric Patterson (Ga. Tech), Sean Smith (Loyola Marymount), Jarrett Hoffpauir (Southern Mississippi), Nate Jaggers (Middle Tenn. State) and Steve Winters (Air Force) on the squad. Sammons, who batted .242-7-31 with nine pickoffs, earned honorable mention honors. He played in 58 games with 52 starts.

This summer, Szabo will be playing for the North Adams SteepleCats of the New England Collegiate Baseball League while Sammons will head to Tucson, Ariz., later this month for the USA Baseball National Team Trials. If he does not make the 22-man Team USA roster, he will join fellow Bulldogs Lee Mitchell and Chaz Lytle in the Cape Cod League as a member of the Cotuit Kettleers.
