Athens, Ga.-----Nicole Barber and Kim Wendland became the first Georgia softball players to be named Louisville Slugger/NFCA (National Fastpitch Coaches Association) All-Americans on Wednesday when the two were awarded Second- and Third-Team honors, respectively.
Fifty-five players were named to the First, Second and Third teams at a banquet prior to the NCAA Division I Softball Women's College World Series in Oklahoma City. All three teams were selected by NFCA-member NCAA Division I coaching representatives, based on nominations from the 2002 season.
"Both players led us offensively all season whether it was scoring runs or getting a clutch RBI," said Bulldog head coach Lu Harris-Champer. "That should not overshadow their outstanding defense. This is a great award that both players deserve."
LSU and Alabama join Georgia as the only SEC schools to place two athletes on the list of All-Americans. Mississippi State placed one.
