ATHENS---Fourth-ranked South Carolina used a 20-hit attack to defeat Georgia 12-4 Saturday at Foley Field in front of a crowd of 2,510.
The Gamecocks (43-12, 20-8 SEC) used a one-two punch of Drew Meyer (3-for-6, 3 RBI) and Steve Thomas (5-for-5, 3 RBI) at the top of the lineup to notch their second straight win over the Bulldogs (30-24, 15-14 SEC). USC jumped out to a 3-0 advantage by the third inning off Bulldog starter Bill Sharpton. Georgia got on the board in the third when Justin Holmes had a two-out double and scored on a base hit by senior right fielder Adam Swann (3-for-4, 2 RBI).
USC answered with three runs in the top of the fourth highlighted by a two-run double by Meyer to build a 6-1 lead. USC starter David Marchbanks (8-3) pitched into the seventh for the victory while Sharpton dropped to 6-5. Marchbanks scattered six hits and two runs with four walks and four strikeouts. Sharpton surrendered seven runs on 11 hits in six innings. USC's Aaron Rawl pitched two scoreless innnings to preserve the victory after Chris Spigner gave up a pair of runs and walked two in relief of Marchbanks.
