Athens, Ga. --- Georgia's Tawana McDonald was selected by the Indiana Fever in the first round of Friday's WNBA draft, becoming the fourth Lady Bulldog taken during the opening round in the last two years.

McDonald was the 13th overall player chosen in the draft. A year ago, her former teammates Kelly Miller, Deanna "Tweety" Nolan and Coco Miller were the No. 2, No. 6 and No. 9 overall players drafted.

"I was very excited," McDonald said. "There wes a big sigh of relief. I was pretty calm all week, but once the selection show started, it felt like my heart kept stopping and starting. I was really nervous."

McDonald completed her career as the Lady Bulldogs' all-time leader in blocked shots, swatting 297 attempts during four seasons. She bettered the record of 1987 National Player of the Year Katrina McClain. McDonald also finished No. 16 on Georgia's career scoring ledger with 1,225 points, No. 8 in rebounds with 885 and No. 5 in career starts 115.

McDonald joins an impressive list of Georgia alumni in the WNBA. A total of 10 Lady Dogs were on opening-day rosters when the 2001 season started, the second-best total of any school in the nation. Former Lady Dogs in the league last summer were: Angie Ball (Charlotte), Stacey Ford (New York), La'Keshia Frett (Sacramento), Lady Hardmon (Sacramento), Tracy Henderson (Cleveland), Kedra Holland-Corn (Sacramento), Coco Miller (Washington), Kelly Miller (Charlotte) and Nolan (Detroit).
