Athens, Ga. --- Kara Braxton, who was named the 2002 SEC Freshman of the Year and voted first-team All-SEC by league coaches, was tabbed first-team Freshman All-America by womenscollegehoops.com on Friday.
"I certainly think Kara had an outstanding year as a freshman, and I look forward to her continued improvement because I know she can be even more productive in years to come," head coach Andy Landers said.
Braxton, a 6-6, forward/center from Jackson, Mich., led the Lady Bulldogs in scoring (16.3), rebounding (6.8), blocks (2.0) and steals (1.8). Braxton tied Tracy Henderson's Lady Bulldog freshman record with 59 blocked shots, swatting a career-high five against Old Dominion in the NCAA Tournament to reach the plateau. In addition, her 489 points equaled Kelly Miller for the fourth-most ever by a UGA freshman.
Braxton reached double digits in the scoring column during 27 of 30 games, including a team single-game high of 29 points at Ole Miss. She also led the Lady Bulldogs with five double-double performances. Braxton became only the third freshman to lead the Lady Dogs in scoring and rebounding, following Janet Harris, a four-time All-American, and Tammye Jenkins, the 1988 National Freshman of the Year.
