Athens --- The Georgia Bulldogs went through a spirited, full-contact scrimmage for two hours at Sanford Stadium on Friday afternoon.

"Overall, I am very pleased with how hard they played, how hard they hit, how they got after each other," head coach Mark Richt said. "I'm very excited to see the intensity level we had today. I think it's the best I've seen since I've been here."

The session was balanced, with the defensive dominating the early portion of the workout when the teams simulated 70- and 60-yard drives.

"Our No. 1 and No. 2 defenses, neither one of the them gave up a touchdown," Richt said. "They probably played about 30 plays apiece. There were about three field goals attempts, and I think (Billy) Bennett connected on two of them."

The latter half of the scrimmage focused on situational drills -- first-and-99 yards to go, overtime, two-point conversions and goal line.

"When we got into the situations, the offense took over, which was a good response because they were frustrated earlier," Richt said. "The No. 1 offense got three first downs from their own 1-yard line. For the first time I can remember since the very first day of spring practice last year, the No. 1 offense went four-for-four on the goal line."

While each unit performed well, Richt gave the defense the upper hand.

"Like I told the offense, the good news is that they were four-for-four on the goal line," Richt said. "The bad news is that they might not have gotten to that point in a game considering how the defense played earlier."

The Bulldogs will conclude spring drills with their annual G-Day game at Sanford Stadium a week from Saturday (April 6) at 2:00 p.m.
