ATHENS, Ga. -- The University of Georgia football team worked out for just over 2 and a half hours Tuesday afternoon in full pads at the Woodruff Practice Fields. It was the Bulldogs' first practice after an eleven day break.
Head coach Mark Richt noted he was pleased with the improvement of the defense.
"The defense is definitely perking up," Richt said. "The last two times we've hooked it up, they've made a lot of improvement as a unit. On the goal line, the number two defense shut out the number two offense for the first time."
Richt noted the rainy weather during Tuesday's practice was to the advantage of the defense but he was still pleased with the unit's effort.
"Anytime it gets nasty, it favors the defense," Richt said. "But the defense is beginning to play harder and meaner. I like what I'm seeing out of the defense."
Of note, wide receiver Fred Gibson joined the football team for the first time this spring after completing his duties with the NCAA tournament qualifying Georgia basketball team. Richt was impressed with Gibson's first day back.
"For a guy who hasn't had any work, he looked really good," Richt said.
Richt also noted that running back Musa Smith was getting involved in non-contact drills, but will not be involved in any scrimmages this spring.
Richt also announced that redshirt freshman defensive back Bama Adams informed him of his intent to transfer to Valdosta State University after the completion of the spring semester.
"He felt he could get more playing time and he'd like to try some offense as well," Richt said of Adams' reason for the decision. "We wish him well."
The Bulldogs will not practice Wednesday and are scheduled to return to practice on Thursday.
