CHICAGO - The Georgia men's basketball team is making its second straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament, but the difference between 2001 and 2002 is like night and day.
The third-seeded Bulldogs (21-9) will take on 14th-seeded Murray State (19-12) here on Friday in an East Regional first-round game. Tip-off will be 20 minutes after the Texas Tech-Southern Illinois contest which starts at 7:50 p.m. and the game will be televised by CBS. The two winners will meet in Sunday's second-round game.
A year ago, the Bulldogs entered the NCAAs as the No. 8 seed in the East and lost to No. 9 seed Missouri 70-68 at the buzzer to finish with a 16-15 record. That postseason experience was a critical part of what became Georgia's turnaround season in 2002.
"Last year, we came in with the No. 8 seed and we were lucky to get in," junior guard Ezra Williams said Thursday following the Bulldogs' workout at the United Center. "It was a great experience and we were just happy to be in the tournament. This year, we want to take advantage of our situation and go as far as we can. We want to take care of business."
