ATHENS----Senior Bill Sharpton struck out a career-high 10 and Chaz Lytle went 4-for-5 with 2 RBI to lead Georgia to a 10-5 win over Mercer Tuesday.
It was a successful home opener for the Bulldogs (3-1) and first-year coach David Perno. The Bears (6-7) took an early 2-0 lead before the Bulldogs took the lead for good in the fifth and then batted around in the sixth for a 8-2 advantage.
Sharpton (1-0) scattered three runs on five hits in 6.1 innings before giving way to the bullpen. Mercer plated three runs in the seventh including RBI-singles by David Harwell (2-5), Mike Apalucci (2-5) and one on a wild pitch.
Georgia extended its lead to 9-5 in the bottom of the seventh as Lytle drove in his second run of the game on his fourth hit of the day. A sacrifice fly by Clint Sammons provided the final margin for the Bulldogs. Georgia remained active on the bases again, stealing six bases including two by Lytle.
Mercer starter Brett Jarrett dropped to 2-2. He allowed just three runs on seven hits in five innings. Georgia managed seven runs off the Bear bullpen including five off Jason Stone in the Bulldog sixth. Stone recorded only one out before being lifted in favor of Chris Bishop who finished the game for the Bears.
The Bulldogs return to action Thursday when they face the Atlanta Braves in an exhibition contest in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. First pitch is slated for 1 pm.
