ATHENS ----- Jarvis Hayes reflected his team's performance, warming up from a sluggish first half to finish with 19 points, as No. 18 Georgia held on to defeat Belmont 87-71 in a non-conference basketball game here Saturday afternoon.
The Bulldogs evened their record by pulling away from the Bruins in the second half. Georgia had built a first-half lead of 11 points but could not keep the scrappy Belmont squad beyond arm's length in the opening period. "Belmont did a lot of nice things to us in the first half," Georgia coach Jim Harrick said. "Sometimes you start a little bit slow, like we did, but overall I thought it was a pretty good game for us."
Belmont led in this game as late as the 6:37 mark of the first half, when Adam Mark hit a spinning layup that put the Bruins ahead 27-26. Reserve guard Wayne Arnold countered with a 3-point shot, which triggered a string of nine consecutive points by the Bulldogs.
With 1:45 left in the half, Chris Daniels rebounded a Hayes miss and gave Georgia its largest margin of the half at 40-29. Belmont responded by finishing the half with 3-pointers on two straight possessions, the latter a long bomb by guard Steve Drabyn with :54 left.
