Georgia's NFL Bulldogs

Georgia Story Lines This Week
*Georgia's defense continues its stellar play, ranking 3rd in the SEC and 15th nationally in Scoring Defense at 17.2 points allowed a game. The Bulldogs lead the SEC in Red Zone Defense with opponents scoring just 57 percent of the time.

*Former Georgia Quarterback Buck Belue is the Honorary Captain of this week's game versus Georgia Tech. He will be scheduled to speak to the team before kickoff.

*The Bulldogs aim to become only the sixth team in school history to record 11 wins in a season. At 10-1, Georgia is enjoying its best year since 1982 when the Bulldogs last captured the SEC. They entered the Sugar Bowl 11-0 and ranked number one but lost to second-ranked Penn State 27-23. Georgia's other teams to post at least 11 wins came in 1980 (12-0), 1971 (11-1), 1946 (11-0) and 1942 (11-1). Georgia also looks to go 7-0 at home for the first time since 1980, the last time the Bulldogs had seven home games.

*The last time Georgia had only one loss heading into the Ga. Tech game was 1983 (9-1-1), and the Bulldogs won 27-24 in Atlanta. The last time Georgia had 10 wins heading into the Ga. Tech game was 1982 (10-0), and the Bulldogs won 38-18 in Athens.

Georgia-Ga. Tech Series
Georgia leads the series 53-36-5 including 26-12-1 in Athens. In games decided by seven points or less, Georgia is 21-12-5...Georgia's biggest win came in 1968 (47-8), the biggest loss in 1905 (44-0)...In the last 10 meetings, Georgia is 7-3...Georgia's last win in Athens came in 1996 (19-10)...For the first time since 1997, this year's contest will not be a matchup of top 25 teams. However in 1997, unranked Ga. Tech gave then 13th-ranked Georgia quite a game before the Bulldogs secured a 27-24 win in Atlanta. With 14 seconds remaining, Ga. Tech's Travares Tillman intercepted a Mike Bobo pass but pass interference was called on Donte Booker, and the Bulldogs got the football back. With eight seconds left and first and goal from the 8, Bobo completed an eight-yard TD pass to Corey Allen for the victory.

Last Meeting: Nov. 24, 2001 in Atlanta, Ga.: #19 Georgia d. #21 Ga. Tech 31-17
Georgia senior RB Verron Haynes ran for 207 yards while kicker Billy Bennett tied an SEC mark and set a Bulldog record with six field goals in leading them to victory, snapping a three-game losing streak to Ga. Tech. The Bulldogs controlled much of the game but stalled in the Red Zone, relying on Bennett for their first 15 points on field goals of 40, 44, 32, 28 and 37 yards. The Yellow Jackets took a brief 10-9 lead in the second quarter before Bennett's fourth field goal gave the Bulldogs a 12-10 half-time edge. A 37-yard TD run by Joe Burns gave the Yellow Jackets a 17-15 edge late in the 3rd quarter but Georgia answered with its only offensive TD of the game, capped by a three-yard run by Haynes. Tim Wansley added a 28-yard INT return for a TD and one more field goal by Bennett provided the final margin.

Last Meeting in Athens: Nov. 25, 2000:
#18 Ga. Tech d. #19 Georgia 27-15
The Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 17-0 advantage in the first quarter and built a 27-3 half-time lead en route to the win. Ga. Tech QB George Godsey ran for a TD and passed for another plus linebacker Darryl Smith returned an interception 70 yards for a TD. Georgia tried to rally in the second half as Cory Phillips completed 26-of-41 passes for 290 and 2 TDs. He finished with a school record-tying 36 completions on 62 attempts for 413 yards in the loss. Godsey finished the day 20-of-35 for 222 yards.

FAST FACT: With Alabama and Clemson on the schedule this season, Georgia will face each of its 10 most frequent rivals. In fact, 60 percent of Georgia's games since 1892 have been played against these 10 teams.

Rivalry Rumblings
The Ga.-Ga. Tech series began in 1893 with the Yellow Jackets winning 28-6. Georgia has the series with Ga. Tech at 53-36-5 and doesn't count two Yellow Jacket wins during World War II.

From 1919-24, the schools did not play each other because of a dispute caused from a Georgia parade float that ridiculed Ga. Tech for playing football during World War I.

In 1933, the first Georgia-Tech freshman/junior varsity game - a Thanksgiving tradition for the next 60 years to benefit Scottish Rite Children's Hospital.

In 1942, #5 Georgia (9-1) faced #2 Ga. Tech (9-0). Frank Sinkwich and Charley Trippi led Georgia to a 34-0 win en route to a national title.

Georgia's Theron Sapp, nicknamed the "Drought Breaker" after his TD gave the Bulldogs a 7-0 win over Tech in 1957, snapping an eight-game losing streak to the Yellow Jackets. Ga.
Tech's drought breaker was Brad Chambers whose 35-yard FG with two seconds left in the 1998 game gave Tech its first win over the Bulldogs after seven straight defeats..

In 1978, Georgia trailed 20-0 in the 2nd quarter when freshman Buck Belue came off the sideline and rallied the team to a 29-28 victory, the biggest comeback in school history to that point.

In 1993, Georgia led 36-10 with 1:29 remaining and then added a TD pass, which fueled charges of running up the score and a brawl between the teams.

Five games in the series history have been decided by one point, four of them won by Georgia, most recently 18-17 in 1995 on a 34-yard FG by Kanon Parkman with 47 seconds left.

Fans who witnessed the last three meetings in the 1990s will argue forever on the following moments: 1997 pass interference against Tech; Joe Hamilton's "non-fumble" in 1998; Jasper Sanks "fumble" in 1999.

Ga. Tech's 51-48 overtime win in 1999 was the highest scoring game in the series and featured 1,104 yards of total offense. In overtime, Georgia blocked Tech's first field goal attempt on third down but the Yellow Jackets recovered and on their second try, Luke Manget made a 38-yarder for the win.

Georgia had experimented with playing two quarterbacks in its first two games this year, however sophomore David Greene saw a majority of the action after Shockley broke a bone in his left foot against South Carolina. Shockley missed the next four games before returning to action against Vanderbilt on Oct. 19 and then showcased his talents in extended play against Kentucky on Oct. 26. Against the Wildcats, Shockley set career-highs, completing 10-of-14 passes for 102 yards and 2 TDs plus had six rushes for 32 yards. Sullivan Turning Up the Heat in the Middle of the Line
While most of the media and fans have heard of the play of senior linebackers Boss Bailey and Tony Gilbert along with sophomore defensive end David Pollack, one Bulldog who is having a big year is junior DT Johnathan Sullivan. The 6-3, 299-pound native of Griffin, Ga., is drawing his share of double teams. He is tied for 1st in the SEC with teammate David Pollack with 28 QB-Pressures and ranks 5th on the team in tackles with 65, has 15.5 tackles for a loss of 53 and 3 sacks for minus 17.

Against Kentucky, Sullivan tallied 4 QB-Pressures, had 1 sack, 2 tackles for a loss of 14 and made 6 tackles. Against Florida, he had a career-high 10 tackles including eight solo stops.

One of the best performances by the defense this season came in the second half against the Wildcats on Oct. 26. In the first half, Kentucky built a 24-21 lead over Georgia with 271 yards of total offense. In the second half, the Wildcats were shutout and managed just 101 total yards.

"It was the same team both halves, there was just a lot more communication," said Sullivan after the game.

Sullivan along with Gilbert and Bailey combined for a pair of sacks right before half-time to force Kentucky out of field goal range after they had driven to the Georgia 18. Defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder credited that series with changing the momentum of the game and sparking the Bulldog defense the rest of the way.

3 Defensive TDs By the Bulldogs
The school record for Most INT returns for TDs is four by the 2000 squad. This season, Georgia has three.

Against South Carolina in one motion, sophomore DE David Pollack stripped the football and then intercepted a Cory Jenkins pass in the endzone for a TD.

The 2002 secondary is ranked 9th in the SEC in pass defense (200.9 yards/game). Opponents have passed for 11 TDs while the Bulldog defense has 12 interceptions. Nine interceptions belong to the secondary. Here is a look at some of their big plays this year.

*Seats to be added in one location above the existing North side upper deck. Also, plan would provide space for up to 27 private club boxes which could come later in subsequent phases of the project.
*Estimated cost of the expansion is $21 million and is part of a $32 million project approved by the Board for facility construction and improvements.
*Also included are construction of a $2 million "All-American Club," a private club area on the second level of the east end of the stadium; $2 million stadium press box renovation; $2 million renovation of the football locker room area at the Butts-Mehre Building; $750,000 for construction of a football "Hall of Fame" on the second level of the Butts-Mehre Building; and $4.2 million for improvements to the women's softball complex.

TOUGH TICKET IN 2002
Facing the greatest football season ticket demand in the history of the program, the University of Georgia Athletic Association had to refund approximately 3,700 tickets. All 2002 home games should be sellouts.

Bulldogs Team Up to Build Habitat House
This past summer, the members of the Georgia football team partnered with HomeBanc Mortgage and Re/Max Associates of Athens to build a Habitat for Humanity House. The house was the first ever constructed with the help of a university football program. The ground breaking ceremony took place April 13 and construction continued through the summer. The project was completed Aug. 3 with a dedication ceremony for the new owner.

Georgia players, coaches, managers, trainers and videographers worked on the house, performing such tasks as building the floor system, erecting the interior and exterior walls, painting and landscaping. The construction project was part of head coach Mark Richt's philosophy of developing the whole person including academics, athletics and community service.

Former Georgia linebacker John Brantley, a sales manager for HomeBanc, who has worked on Habitat for Humanity projects in the past, talked with Richt prior to a home game when he was an honorary captain. The idea evolved from there and the Bulldogs went to work.

Serving It Up, Family Style for a Party of Eight
There are some familiar names around the Georgia program again this year, as has been the case for several years. The Bulldogs have successfully recruited players whose brothers or fathers have taken the field for the red and black. This year, the eight families include:
BAILEY:
Senior LB Boss Bailey is the younger brother of 1998 Georgia All-American DB Champ Bailey (1996-98). Champ was the No. 1 draft choice of the Washington Redskins in 1999 and made All-Pro by 2000. Also, the eldest Bailey, Ronald, was a cornerback for the Bulldogs from 1995-97. Junior CB Kenny Bailey is a cousin of the Bailey trio.

EDWARDS:
Senior WR Terrence Edwards is the younger brother of former Georgia RB Robert Edwards (1993-94, '96-97), a first round draft choice of the New England Patriots. Edwards has made a comeback following a three-year rehab of a severe knee injury and plays for Miami.

McCLENDON:
Freshman WR Bryan McLendon is the son of former Georgia standout RB Willie McClendon (1976-78), who was captain of the 1978 squad and the SEC Player-of-the-Year that season. He went on to play professionally with the Chicago Bears.

STINCHCOMB:
Senior OT Jon Stinchcomb is the younger brother of former Georgia All-America OT Matt Stinchcomb (1995-98), a first round draft choice of the Oakland Raiders in 1999.

TAYLOR:
Freshman LB Tony Taylor is the son of former Georgia standout linebacker Nate Taylor (1979-82) who was a member of the 1980 national championship squad and part of three SEC Championship teams.

TERESHINSKI:
Freshman QB Joe Tereshinski III is a third generation Bulldog. His father, Joe Jr. (1974-76), was the starting center on Georgia's 1976 SEC champion Sugar Bowl team while his father, Joe Tereshinski Sr. (1942, '45,'46) was a member of Georgia's 1942 Rose Bowl championship squad as well as the 1946 SEC and Sugar Bowl championships teams.

TOWNS:
Senior SE Kirby Towns is the son of former Georgia player Bobby Towns (1957-59) and grandson of Forrest "Spec" Towns (1935-38). Bobby played for the NFL's St. Louis Cardinals while Spec was a gold medalist in track (120-yard hurdles) at the 1936 Olympics.

SWOOPES:
Freshman OL Randall Swoopes is the son of former Georgia standout DT Ronnie Swoopes (1974-77) who earned All-SEC honors and was a member of the 1976 SEC championship squad plus was defensive captain his senior year.

Tallying Up the Ws
Georgia has extended its school record for consecutive seasons with at least eight wins. The streak began in 1997 and finds the Bulldogs 10th nationally in winning percentage in this span.
