ATHENS ---- An appeal by University of Georgia junior forward Steven Thomas for his academic eligibility was denied by the NCAA, and he is therefore ineligible to participate in Georgias basketball games during Fall, 2002 semester.
Thomas was already serving a 3-game suspension to begin the season, fulfilling the conditions of his reinstatement to the team last September. Because of his academic ineligibility, that suspension is nullified. Instead, Thomas will be required to perform 40 hours of community service before he can participate with the Bulldogs during the Spring, 2003 semester, according to those same conditions of his reinstatement to the team.
The earliest possible date that Thomas could regain his athletic eligibility would be Dec. 18, 2002, the day after the conclusion of Fall Semester final exams.
Thomas, from Carrollton, Ga., averaged 8.4 points and 6.4 rebounds last season, starting in 26 of 28 games at center for the Bulldogs.
