Georgia Volleyball Defeats Eastern Michigan, 3-1

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Georgia volleyball team won its fourth match in five outings on Friday as the Bulldogs defeated Eastern Michigan, 3-1 (30-22, 30-20, 26-30, 32-30), during the first day of play at the 2001 Michigan Pepsi Challenge taking place in Ann Arbor, Mich.

The Bulldogs were led on the evening by senior outside hitter Stacy Buerger, who tallied 23 kills, eight digs and hit .362 for the match. Also giving the Bulldogs a helping hand were sophomore outside hitter Luresa Forsythe, who registered 12 kills and 11 digs, senior middle blocker Erin Gornes, who had 10 kills, two digs and four total blocks, and Blissfield, Mich., native Kilee Goetz, who added 55 assists, nine digs and three block assists.

The Bulldogs were brilliant on defense Friday night as they outblocked (10-6) and outdug (55-51) the Eagles. Offensively Georgia had the advantages in both total kills (64-55) and hitting percentage (.262-.205).

At 4-1 on the season Georgia is now off to its best start since 1993, when it started the year winning its first eight matches.

The Bulldogs return to action on Saturday when they will play two matches. Georgia will start its day at 11 a.m. when it takes on the Pittsburgh Panthers and then close out the day with a match against tournament host Michigan at 7 p.m.
