ATHENS, Ga - Georgia freshman Nichole Urban was named SEC Pitcher of the Week by the conference office on Monday. Urban finished last week with a 3-0 record, throwing two complete-game victories over Georgia Tech and one seven-inning three-hitter over Florida.
"This is an award that Urban definitely deserves," said head coach Lu Harris. "She is pitching her heart out and she's getting better every time out. I am very proud of her effort."
Urban leads Georgia's pitching staff with 10 wins, and earlier this season she won six straight decisions, including a string of five straight Georgia wins. On March 2, Urban tag-teamed a five-inning no-hitter over Delaware State with the Dogs' other freshman starter Kaili Howard.
Natalie Price was the last Bulldog to be named Pitcher of the Week, as she claimed the honor twice during her 2000 senior campaign. Price earned the honor five times during her brilliant four-year career, and lefty Rhonda Coffelt also won the award in 1998.
Urban and Arkansas' Heather Schlichtman are the only freshmen to receive Pitcher of the Week honors this year. On March 5, Urban's teammate Nicole Barber was named the conference's Player of the Week.
Georgia (25-24 overall, 5-16 SEC) travels to Oxford, Miss., this weekend for a three-game series with Mississippi (17-31, 4-14). The all-time series between the two schools is tied at four, with the Rebels taking two last year in Athens.
