ATHENS-- Of the 28 possible opponents on the 2001-02 Georgia basketball schedule -- announced today by head coach Jim Harrick -- 19 played in post-season tournaments last year, a downgrade of only the slightest degree from the monstrous lineup of 2001.
A holiday trip to Hawaii and an appearance at the National Basketball Hall of Fame are among the non-conference highlights of the 2002 slate. The Bulldogs will face Georgetown, an NCAA Sweet 16 team last year, in the annual Tip-Off Classic at Springfield, Mass., on Nov. 19. They'll also play in the Rainbow Classic in Honolulu, an 8-team tournament that the 1996-97 Bulldogs of Tubby Smith won in unexpected fashion. Five of the eight participating teams at this year's Rainbow Classic, including host Hawaii, played in the NCAA Tournament last season.
"Sometimes you can't predict the difficulty of your schedule," Harrick said. "You never know how some teams are going to turn out, and I don't think anybody could have predicted how tough last year's schedule turned out. But we think our schedule in 2002 will be just as balanced and competitive as last year and will help us keep a strong, legitimate RPI throughout the season."
