Box Score Daniels Leads Bulldogs past South Alabama

Chris Daniels led all scorers with 21 points and added 14 rebounds -- both career highs -- as Georgia defeated South Alabama 79-70 in the first game of the Coors Classic here Saturday.

Daniels and the steady play of point guard Rashad Wright helped keep the host Jaguars at arm's reach for much of the game. South Alabama, which trailed by as many as 11 points early in the second half, pulled within two on three separate occasions.

The final time came when USA's Henry Williams made a short jumper with 13:38 left, getting the Jags within 54-52. Jarvis Hayes then missed for Georgia, but Jamaicus Ricks was unable to give his team the lead when he misfired from 3-point range on its next possession.

Georgia countered with a 3-pointer from Tony Cole with 13:10 left. Daniels followed with two free throws at the 12:28 mark, and South Alabama never got within five points thereafter.

"I was proud of the way our guys kept fighting and maintained good poise because this was a difficult game," Georgia coach Jim Harrick said. "South Alabama gave us everything we could handle. They caused us a lot of problems with their quickness on defense."

Though he finished with just two assists, Wright scored 12 points and also added five rebounds. Hayes finished with 18 points as the Bulldogs' only other double-digit scorer.
