Stinchcomb Named Academic All-American

ATHENS, Ga. - University of Georgia junior offensive tackle Jon Stinchcomb was named to the Verizon Academic All-America Football Team according to an announcement by Verizon and the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on Monday.
Stinchcomb, who was named a Second-Team All-American by Football News last month, started nine games for the Bulldogs this season before suffering a knee injury which kept him out of the final two games. The injury ended his streak of 29 consecutive starts, which started his freshman year.
This season Stinchcomb anchored a line which helped the Bulldogs rank fourth in the SEC in rushing offense (162.5 yard per game) and third in total offense (432.8 yards per game). He was also named to the watch lists for the Rotary Lombardi Award and Outland Trophy Award.
Stinchcomb's brother, Matt, now of the Oakland Raiders, was a two-time Academic All-American in 1997 and '98 and was named the national scholar-athlete of the year in 1998.
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Verizon Academic All-America program, which was founded by CoSIDA in 1952 to recognize collegiate student athletes for their outstanding achievements in the classroom and on the playing field.
