Jeff Smith was named Senior Associate Athletic Director for Compliance in March 2024. His primary duties include serving on the athletic department’s senior staff and overseeing the daily operations of the university’s athletics compliance office. He is the primary contact to the Southeastern Conference and coordinates Georgia’s campus positions on SEC and NCAA legislation.

Prior to UGA, Smith served as Associate Athletic Director for Compliance at NC State University for four years. During his time at NC State, he helped lead the day-to-day functions of the Compliance Department and served as compliance liaison for eight sports including both men’s and women’s basketball. Smith handled all compliance matters for his designated sports which included numerous All-Americans, Team USA members, and culminated in a Final Four run in both men’s and women’s basketball.

Smith joined NC State after serving as the Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance at the University of Kansas. As the Assistant AD for Compliance, Smith served as the compliance liaison for both football and men’s basketball. Smith testified as the University of Kansas representative and NCAA rules expert in U.S. v. James Gatto on behalf of the U.S. Department of Justice. Prior to his promotion to Assistant AD, Smith served as the Director and later Senior Director of Compliance at Kansas where he supervised the rules education program for the Compliance Department.

Prior to his time at Kansas, Smith spent time at The Ohio State University as the Assistant Director of Compliance. He served as the compliance liaison for eight sports during his time at OSU. Smith started his compliance career as compliance extern at the University of Tennessee before serving as the Compliance Assistant at the Big 12 Conference Office.

Smith is a graduate of Michigan State University and earned his Juris Doctorate from the University of Tennessee. He is married to the former Kristin Van Dusseldorp and they have settled in the Athens, GA area with their two children, Knox and Sydney.
