No. 1 Bulldogs Defeat No. 8 Duke 4-1, Advance to NCAA Semifinals

May 15, 2025 | Women's Tennis

WACO, Texas — The No. 1 Georgia women's tennis team (27-3, 13-2 SEC) advanced to the NCAA Championship semifinals after a 4-1 victory over No. 8 Duke (24-4, 12-0 ACC) in the NCAA quarterfinal round at the Hurd Tennis Center on Thursday.

Fast Facts
  • Georgia improves to 17-15 against Duke all-time, now taking the 5-4 edge in NCAA Tournament matches.
  • The Bulldogs have now advanced to the NCAA semifinals for a third consecutive season and the 15th time in program history.
  • Georgia remains undefeated in tournament-style competition this spring, improving to 11-0 between winning the 2025 ITA National Team Indoor Championships (four wins), the 2025 SEC Tournament (three wins) and the opening four rounds of the NCAA Tournament.
  • The Bulldogs trailed early after losing doubles point for only the fourth time this season. The #1 tandem of Dasha Vidmanova and Mell Reasco struck first for Georgia, closing out three consecutive games to defeat #20 Irina Balus and Elizabeth Coleman, 6-2, on court one. The Blue Devils would go on to take courts two and three to lead 1-0 in the match.
  • #74 Guillermina Grant was the first to cross the finish line in singles, dominating #95 Shavit Kimchi, 6-1, 6-3, on court five to get Georgia on the board and level the match at 1-1. The result marks Grant's eight-consecutive victory and improves her to 31-8 on the year in singles.
  • #17 Anastasiia Lopata was sharp all match long, dominating #26 Balus in straight sets for a 6-1, 6-1 victory on court two to earn the Bulldogs their first lead of the day at 2-1. The win snapped a streak of five-straight unfinished singles matches for Lopata, good for her highest-ranked win this spring.
  • Leading on all four remaining courts, #2 Vidmanova struck next as she defeated #61 Liv Hovde, 6-4, 6-2, on court one to put Georgia one point away from victory. The result gives Vidmanova her 30th overall singles win this year, marking her second 30+ singles win season in a Georgia uniform (2022-23) while also setting a new career-high 18 dual singles match wins in a single season.
  • Within minutes, #42 Aysegul Mert slammed the door on a Blue Devil comeback bid, defeating #72 Eleana Yu, 6-3, 6-1, on court four to secure the clinch for Georgia. Mert earned her 50th career singles win while extending her winning streak to six matches.
