Freshmen donates own money to aid service projects

ATHENS, Ga. —- Georgia's Somto Cyril has been honored as a member of the Southeastern Conference's Community Service Team for men's basketball, which was released by the league office on Thursday.

Cyril has made a positive impact on the Athens/Clarke County Community since the day he arrived on campus last summer. Among his community service efforts, Cyril took a leading role in the basketball program's "Shop with a Bulldog" efforts to provide a brighter Christmas holiday for deserving members of the Athens Boys' & Girls' Clubs, making his own personal monetary contribution in addition to the team's funds. Cyril also contributed his own money to help purchase school supplies for Barrow Elementary, which is located across the street from the UGA campus. In addition, Cyril took part in the Clarke County Mentor Program's Student-Athlete "Spooky Dawgs" initiative and has been a key contributor in the Bulldogs' association Team IMPACT relationship with Beck Cammarata. Cammarata is a 14-year-old from nearby Winder, Ga., who is battling Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Team IMPACT, a national non-profit organization, has developed a unique multiyear program that matches children facing serious illness and disability with college athletic teams across the country.

On the court, Cyril is averaging 4.8 points and 3.8 rebounds in 30 games played. He leads the Bulldogs in both field goal percentage and (.646) and blocks (48). Cyril ranks 61st nationally – and eighth among freshmen – in average blocks per game at 1.6.

Georgia is 19-11 overall and 7-10 in SEC play entering Saturday's regular-season finale against Vanderbilt. The Bulldogs are looking to strengthen their postseason résumé and make history on Saturday. Georgia has reached the 20-win plateau during the regular season just five times in 118 seasons of basketball.

A limited number of tickets for the Vanderbilt game remain and are available at www.georgiadogs.com/mbbtix.

This marks the 27th year for the SEC Community Service Team for men's basketball as well as for women's basketball. All 22 league-sponsored sports have had a Community Service Team since 2004, with at-large teams for men's and women's sports being chosen from 1999-2003. The SEC began this concept with a football Community Service Team in 1994.
