Bulldog honored in balloting of league coaches
ATHENS, Ga. — Georgia's Asa Newell has been named the the SEC's All-Freshman Team in balloting of league coaches. The conference office announced the men's basketball awards on Monday afternoon.
Newell, a 6-11, 220-pound forward from Destin, Fla., has started all 31 games for Georgia this season, notching 28 double-figure scoring outputs including four 20-point performances. He also has six double-digit rebound outings and six double-doubles. Newell has led Georgia offensively 19 times and on the boards in 14 games.
Newell leads the Bulldogs in both scoring and (15.1 ppg) and rebounding (6.5 rpg). Among SEC leaders, he is No. 16 in scoring, No. 13 in rebounding, No. 3 in field goal percentage and No. 3 in offensive rebounds per game.
Newell was named SEC Freshman of the Week four times, matching Anthony Edwards for the most FOTW certificates by a Bulldog. He is the 15th Georgia player to earn SEC All-Freshman honors since the award's inception in 1987, including current teammate Silas Demary Jr.
Georgia finished the regular season with a 20-11 record, just the sixth time in 119 seasons that the Bulldogs reached the 20-win mark during the regular season. Georgia will open play in the SEC Tournament on Wednesday when it faces Oklahoma at approximately 9:30 p.m. ET.
