Betos Announces Retirement from Professional Soccer

February 03, 2025 | Soccer

HARRISON, N.J. – Michelle Betos, one of the University of Georgia soccer program's most accomplished players, announced her retirement from professional soccer on Jan. 22, concluding an outstanding 15-year career.

Betos finished her career with three seasons playing for Gotham FC, where she won the 2023 NWSL Championship. On Feb. 1, Gotham FC announced Betos will now serve as the team's assistant goalkeepers coach.

Betos' NWSL career began in 2013 as she was selected with the 34th overall pick by Seattle Reign FC in the league's inaugural supplemental draft. The Queens, New York native moved to the Portland Thorns in 2014, earning NWSL Goalkeeper of the Year and NWSL Best XI honors in the 2015 season. During the 2015 season, she became the first NWSL goalkeeper to ever score a goal with her 95th-minute equalizing header for a Portland side with only 10 players.

Betos later returned to Seattle and captained Racing Louisville FC in its debut 2021 season, finishing second in the league with 95 saves. She appeared in 96 NWSL matches, while also playing professionally for New York Fury of the Women's Premier Soccer League, Apollon Limassol in the UEFA Champions League, Sydney FC of the Australian A-League, and Vålerenga Fotball of the Norwegian Toppserien league.

Prior to her pro career, Betos played for Georgia from 2006-09, becoming one of the program's most prolific keepers during a highly successful era for the Bulldogs. She is tied for first all-time in wins (49), while ranking second in appearances (81) and shutouts (26), third in starts (76), and fourth in saves (316) and goals against average (1.05). She was named to the 2006 SEC All-Freshman Team and helped the Bulldogs reach two SEC Tournament finals and three NCAA Tournaments, including a No. 18 final national ranking in 2007.
