By Rosemary Ferguson
Rarely do freshmen arrive on a collegiate campus already having Olympic experience. That is exactly the case for first-year sprinters Sanaa Frederick and Sole Frederick, who are twins from Decatur, Ga. The Druid Hills High School graduates competed for Trinidad & Tobago in the 4x100-meter relay at the Paris Olympics, taking eighth in the second heat with a 43.99 and missing the final. Sole ran the second leg and Sanaa took the baton from her for leg three. The twins have dual citizenship thanks to their dad Peter's background.
Here is a look at who the Frederick twins are . . .
Q: For either one of you, why did you choose the University of Georgia?
Sanaa: I chose UGA because of all the resources on and off the track, but I especially chose it because of the team. Everyone just bonds together well and there's definitely a family dynamic. Coach Caryl is definitely one of the best coaches in the SEC so I knew we would be great here at Georgia.
Q: Why come to UGA together after being together your whole life?
Sole: I feel like when we came on our visit here, we just both knew this feels like home, and this is the place to be. Like (Sanaa) said, the team, coaches, everything just felt right here.
Sanaa: I feel like once you go on your visit, you just get that feeling and you know.
Sole: We are also twins and we've been together our whole lives so of course we wouldn't want to separate.
Q: What was your Olympic experience like?
Sanaa: Definitely feels unreal and like it was a big learning experience. I am very grateful to say that we are Olympians at 19 years old.
Sole: It was fun seeing all of the people we look up to just walking around like normal. It was just really cool.
Q: What are each of your goals for this season?
Sanaa: My goals are to have a (personal record) and hopefully become an All-American in any event, the 4x1, 100 or 200.
Sole: Same thing for me. I want to PR in all of my events.
Q: If you were not track athletes, what sport would you play?
Sole: I feel like every time I try to play a sport with a ball, I just can't do it so I don't know.
Sanaa: I would probably say softball since it's a lot of running and you can use speed.
Sole: Maybe flag football since there's still a lot of running.
Q: What is your favorite thing about each other?
Sanaa: I would say Sole's fierceness. Everyone says I am more sensitive and calm, but she is more out there, and I really like that about her.
Sole: I would say the same thing. She is like the opposite of me so it really balances each other out.
Q: Who were your biggest mentors growing up?
Sanaa: Definitely our dad (Peter Frederick). He coached us in high school so he definitely kept us focused and we couldn't miss one day of practice.
Sole: Dad definitely always kept us accountable.
Q: What is a piece of advice you would give a high school athlete wanting to compete at the next level?
Sanaa: I would say to be consistent, no days off. Do it tired. Do it in any condition, just don't give up.
Sole: In practice, stay focused and give it your all no matter what. What you do in practice will always come out in your performance. Do everything you can in practice correctly, and then also make the mistakes in practice so that you don't in the meet.
Sanaa: Always give a 100 percent even when you don't feel like it. All that matters is giving it your all.
Q: Who have you connected with most on the track team?
Sole: I would say Rylee (Hampton) and Jaci (Wright). They are both freshmen and both do hurdles.
Q: Is there anything else you want to add?
Sanaa: Just that I love UGA and I love everyone here!
