February 18, 2025 | Baseball, Track & Field
ATHENS, Ga.----Former University of Georgia baseball standout Charlie Condon along with track and field Paralympian Jarryd Wallace are among the 39 athletes named a semifinalist for the 95th AAU James E. Sullivan Award, the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) announced Tuesday.
Since 1930, the AAU James E. Sullivan Award has been presented to the most exceptional athlete at the collegiate, Olympic, or other similarly elite level in the United States. As well as honoring athletic excellence, the AAU Sullivan award also recognizes the chosen athlete's character and honors their quality of leadership, citizenship, and sportsmanship. The one-week voting period to determine the finalists is open to the public now through February 25, 2025. Voting can be done here: https://gado.gs/cms
Condon, a 6-6, 216-pound native of Marietta, Ga., posted one of the greatest seasons in collegiate baseball history as he swept every national award in 2024. He claimed the USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award, the Dick Howser Trophy and the Bobby Bragan Slugger Award Winner and then was a first-round draft pick (third overall selection) of the Colorado Rockies. A consensus All-American, Academic All-SEC and National Player of the Year, he led the NCAA in four statistical categories including batting average (.433) and home runs (37) as the Bulldogs reached an NCAA Super Regional with a 43-17 record.
Wallace, a UGA graduate born in Athens, Ga., began running as an able-bodied athlete, won a state title for Oconee County High School, and signed a scholarship with the Bulldogs. However, after multiple surgeries due to compartment syndrome, he opted to have his right leg amputated and vowed to return to the sport as a Paralympian. He became a five-time world champion and four-time Paralympian, competing as a sprinter and in the long jump. Jarryd is the son of former six-time national champion Georgia women's tennis coach Jeff Wallace, who along with his wife Sabina, were former UGA student-athletes as well.
The winner of the 95th AAU Sullivan Award will be announced at an awards ceremony on Tuesday, Apr. 15, 2025, at the New York Athletic Club. The winner will join a renowned list of recipients.
