KENNESAW, Ga. – Two-time national champion and two-time All-American Georgia tennis player Philip Johnson is set to be inducted into the Georgia Tennis Hall of Fame on Saturday, Aug. 10, 2024, at the Marietta Country Club.
The Georgia Tennis Hall of Fame induction ceremony is a recognition effort by the Georgia Tennis Foundation. Johnson joins Gery Groslimond, a former Stanford tennis player and head coach at Georgia Tech, to complete the 2024 class.
The Dalton native, despite his smaller stature and frame, was mentored by legendary teaching pro Jack Waters during his junior career. Under his wing, Johnson became the No. 1 junior singles player in Georgia, and prior to the 1983 collegiate season, he was recruited to play at the University of Georgia by Dan Magill. Atlanta sports reporter and anchor Sam Crenshaw will also be awarded the Dan Magill Impact Award.
Throughout his Georgia career, Johnson had many memorable moments. In 1985, his match-clinching win on court No. 5 handed the Bulldogs their first team national championship. As a junior, he was unbeaten during SEC play, and over the course of his last two seasons in Athens, Johnson played No. 1 singles for the program.
After leaving Georgia, Johnson played on the pro tour, earning a career high ATP ranking of 135. He won two tournaments while on tour, and impressively, the 2024 inductee reached the third round of the 1989 US Open. As a coach, Johnson was at the Chattanooga Racquet Club for 12 years as well as the Baylor School for another 13 years.
Johnson is now a teaching pro at Chattanooga's Manker Patten Tennis Club. He is currently engaged to his fiancé Megan England, and he has a daughter, Taylor, and a son, Reed.
