Fink Wins Gold and Edwards Shines on Busy Olympic Saturday

PARIS – Georgia alum Nic Fink earned the Bulldogs' second medal of the Olympics, highlighting a terrific day of competition Saturday at the 2024 Summer Olympic Games.
 
Swimming
  • Nic Fink joined Ryan Murphy, Gretchen Walsh, and Torri Huske to earn gold in the mixed 4x100-meter medley relay with a world-record time of 3:37.43. Fink posted a 58.29 split in the 100m breaststroke, the second-fastest of all competitors in the leg. Fink's victory marked the first gold medal of his illustrious career, 16th gold medal won by a Bulldog swimmer, and the 40th in Georgia program history.
  • Javier Acevedo anchored Canada's seventh-place men's 4x100m medley relay in Saturday's prelim, helping the Canadians reach Sunday's final with a time of 3:32.33. Acevedo's 100m freestyle split of 47.76 helped his team finish fourth in the heat and advance to the final.
  • Acevedo and Fink may both compete in the men's 4x100 medley relay on Sunday at 1:10 p.m. on NBC and Peacock in the final day of swimming competition.
 
Basketball
  • Anthony Edwards led all scorers with a fantastic 26-point performance in the United States' 104-83 victory over Puerto Rico in its pool play finale in Lille. In 17 minutes off the bench, Edwards finished 11-for-15 from the field, including 3-for-6 from beyond the arc, along with three rebounds and three assists.
  • With the victory, the U.S. finished first in Group C and earned the top overall seed in the medal round. The Americans will play in the quarterfinal round Tuesday in Paris.
 
Track & Field
  • Keturah Orji capped off her third Olympic appearance with a ninth-place finish in the women's triple jump final. The American posted a mark of 14.05 meters/46 feet, 1.25 inches on her third attempt to record her third top-10 finish in as many Olympic Games (4th – Rio 2016, 7th – Tokyo 2020) Orji guided the Lady Bulldogs to an NCAA indoor team championship during the 2018 season which also saw her win the Bowerman, track & field's premier annual collegiate award.
  • Bulldog assistant coach Janek Oiglane achieved a fifth-place finish in the decathlon, highlighted by a win in the pole vault with a mark of 5.30m/17-4.50. The Estonia native compiled a personal-best 8,572 points to edge out fellow Bulldog and Estonian Johannes Erm by three points. Erm placed sixth with 8,569 pts. while Karel Tilga, also from Estonia, tallied 8,377 pts. to finish 11th.
  • Cejhae Greene competed for Antigua and Barbuda in his third Olympic Games, clocking a time of 10.17 to place 30th in the first round of the 100-meter dash.
  • Current Bulldog Stephanie Ratcliffe will kick off Sunday's Olympic track & field action representing Australia in the hammer throw qualification at 4:20 a.m. Incoming freshman Adaejah Hodge will take the track at 4:55 a.m. to compete for the British Virgin Islands in the women's 200-meter dash first round.
  • Sunday afternoon's events will feature 2024 NCAA indoor and outdoor champion Christopher Morales Williams (Canada) in the men's 400m first round at 1:05 p.m. followed by Elena Kulichenko (Cyprus) and Tatiana Gusin (Greece) in the high jump final at 1:50 p.m.
 
Golf
  • Sepp Straka moved up one spot to a tie for 34th place at 2-under after shooting a 1-under 70 in the third round of the Olympics for Austria on Saturday at Le Golf National.
  • Straka tees off at 4:33 a.m. for the final round on Sunday on Golf Channel and Peacock.
 
Soccer
  • Croix Bethune was not elevated to the main 18-player roster for the United States' 1-0 quarterfinal victory over Japan. The USWNT will play Germany in the semifinal Tuesday at noon on USA and Peacock.
