ATHENS, Ga -Â The University of Georgia men's tennis team has signed transfer Arda Azkara, head coach Jamie Hunt announced on Wednesday.
Â
"We couldn't be more excited that Arda chose to be a Bulldog," said Hunt. "He has ambitious goals that perfectly align with the standard of excellence we have as a program. He is a high character individual who will fit in perfectly with our team. We can't wait for him to get to Athens."
Â
Azkara, from Izmir, Turkey, will join the Bulldogs after spending the last three years at the University of New Mexico. During his time with the Lobos, Azkara compiled 50 wins in singles play. He was named the Mountain West Co-Freshman of the Year in 2022 following an impressive first campaign. After his sophomore and junior seasons, Azkara became the first Mountain West player to earn back-to-back Player of the Year honors since Oliver Maiberger of San Diego State University from 2001-2003. During conference play last season, he recorded an 11-0 record at No. 1 singles for the Lobos. Azkara holds a 13.15 Universal Tennis Ranking and has an ATP World Singles Ranking of 988.
Â
"I choose Georgia because of the tennis culture they have," said Azkara. "I'm really happy and proud to be joining the Georgia men's tennis family."
Â
Azkara will transfer in January after graduating from New Mexico in December with a degree in Business.Â
