Morales Williams Completes Indoor-Outdoor NCAA T&F 400m Sweep
June 08, 2024 | Track & Field
EUGENE, Ore. --- Georgia sophomore Christopher Morales Williams completed the indoor-outdoor sweep in the 400-meter dash on the third day of the NCAA Outdoor Championships Friday.
Morales Williams, a native of Vaughn, Ontario, became the first Bulldog to sweep the same event indoors and outdoors in the same year*. His 400m crown is the 20th NCAA outdoor individual title for the Georgia men after graduate transfer Marc Minichello captured the javelin championship earlier this week. *Andras Haklits won the weight throw indoors and hammer throw outdoors in 2001 & Karel Tilger won the heptathlon indoors and decathlon outdoors in 2021.
True freshman Riyon Rankin left Hayward Field with an expected First Team All-America certificate as well in the high jump. The Brunswick, Ga., native posted three straight first attempt clearances to be the second-best Southeastern Conference finisher in the event.
In the multi-events, sophomore Ella Rush tallied 3,271 points after the first four events of the heptathlon to hold in 22nd place. Her performance included a personal record of 24.93 in the 200m.
Other than the decathlon running Wednesday-Thursday and the heptathlon going Friday-Saturday, the meet is set up to be a men's competition on Wednesday and Friday and a women's competition on Thursday and Saturday.
The Georgia men finished ninth with 25 points, marking the seventh straight top-10 performance for the Bulldogs at the meet. Florida (41) edged Auburn (40) for the men's team title while USC (33), Alabama (32) and Texas A&M (31) rounded out the top five. With only six of 21 events scored on the women's side, Florida (26) leads Nebraska (22), Oregon (15), Washington (14.5) and Rice (14) in the top five.
On Wednesday, Minichello earned First Team All-American honors for the third time in his career as he collected his second NCAA javelin title (also was the 2022 champion at Penn). In addition, Alex Kolesnikoff scored for the first time in his career outdoors with a sixth-place finish in the shot put.
When Do The Bulldogs Start Day 4: Rush and the hep field will wrap up the competition on Saturday with the long jump, javelin and 800m starting at 1:30 p.m.
Junior Elena Kulichenko, who is ranked second nationally in the high jump, competes at 5 p.m. on the final day to start the open events. Sophomore Kaila Jackson will run in the 100m final at 5:22 p.m. to begin track events before she returns at 7:07 p.m. in the 200m final.

The Lowdown: Morales Williams won his fifth 400m of the season with the fifth sub-45 second time of the 2024 outdoor season. He registered a 44.47 to edge Alabama's Samuel Ogazi (44.52) for the win as four competitors broke the 45-second mark in the final. In one of his tightest races of 2024, Morales Williams muscled in front of the field in the final meters to claim Georgia's first NCAA outdoor title on the track since 2023 (Will Sumner, 800m).
Rankin went over the high jump bar cleanly at 2.07 meters/6 feet, 9 ½ inches, 2.12m/6-11.50 and 2.17/7-1.50 in his first action at Nationals to finish seventh. This earned the Bulldogs' another two points and delivered the first-year jumper an expected First Team All-America certificate.
Rush began the heptathlon by taking third in her heat and 21st overall with a 14.30. In her second event, the Repton, U.K., native cleared her first three attempts in the high jump, including a mark of 1.66m/5-5.25 (15th) that helped put her in 19th place going into the shot put. Rush matched that finish in the high jump after finishing her three-throw series with a mark of 11.62m/38-1.50. She was 21st following the first three events.
Rush completed her day with her first lifetime best of the competition. She ran a 24.93 in the 200m to take 14th and score her final 893 points of the day.
