Current, Former Dogs Qualify Three For Finals, Six For Semifinals At U.S. Track & Field Trials

EUGENE, Ore. --- Current and former Bulldogs qualified for three finals and six semifinals during the opening day of the U.S. Olympic Track & Field Trials at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., Friday.
One current Georgia student-athlete and a pair of former Lady Bulldog jumpers advanced to the next round in their events.
Six current Bulldogs and nine former Georgia standouts are competing in their home country's Trials between June 21-30. The meet is being held on the University of Oregon campus where the Bulldog men and women recently finished ninth and 10th, respectively, at the 2024 NCAA Outdoor Championships (June 5-8). The top three finishers in each event at the Trials will advance to the Olympic Games in Paris (August 1-11), barring the athletes have the standard mark/time necessary in their event.
When Do The Bulldogs Begin On Day Two: Garland and Williams will start their final five events in the decathlon on Saturday with the 110m hurdles at 1 p.m. ET. Following the sixth event, they will have the discus, pole vault, javelin and 1500m on day two. Former Lady Bulldog Jamari Drake will begin the action in the open events in the women's high jump at 8 p.m.

The Lowdown: Minichello, who hails from West Pittston, Pa., stood in 13th place - one out of advancing – going into his final toss in the javelin. He popped his best effort 70.64m/231-1 to move into the final on Sunday at 9:40 p.m.
Orji, who finished fourth at the 2016 Olympics, soared 13.75m/45-1.50 on her opening attempt and finished third after passing on her next two attempts. Marsh built to a season best on her third and final try (13.54m/44-5.25) to take fourth and advance to her second consecutive Olympic Trials final.
The decathlon started with Garland speeding to a season best in the 100m (10.64) for fourth place. Williams ran a 10.74 for ninth in the opening event. Williams responded in the second event, the long jump, with a winning mark of 7.56m/24-9.75 on his second try while Garland had one legal mark of 7.41m/24-3.75 on his first attempt for fifth place.
In the shot put, Garland had the day's third-longest mark of 15.33m/49-10.50 to slide into third overall. Williams sandwiched his best throw of the competition (14.72m/48-3.50) between his first and third throws to take eight. He was in fourth overall after the third event.
Garland tallied six clearances in the high jump, topping out at a season best 2.13m/6-11.75 for second. Williams also reached the top height of his season at 1.95m/6-4.75 to be eighth in the fourth event. In Friday's final of the dec, won the initial heat and had the fifth-fastest time in the 400m with a 48.42. Garland ran out of the last group and was sixth in the heat and 11th overall (48.91).

- Marc Minichello, who won the NCAA javelin title for Georgia at the same complex two weeks ago, worked up to a third attempt of 70.64 meters/231 feet, 9 inches to sneak into ninth place with the top 12 advancing.
- Keturah Orji, who registered a legal effort before passing twice, finished third in the triple jump and Titiana Marsh had a season best effort to finish one spot behind Orji.
- Both former Bulldog NCAA champions Matthew Boling and Elija Godwin advanced to the men's 400m semifinal. Boling, who already has the Olympic standard, was fourth overall with a personal best 44.94 while Godwin had a season best of 45.53 to take 19th to advance to the next round on Sunday.
- Georgia was four-for-four for qualifiers in the opening round of the women's 400m. Current sprinter Aaliyah Butler won the second heat with a 50.44 to be second overall; former NCAA champion Lynna Irby-Jackson was the top finisher in the opening heat and third overall with a 50.89; current sprinter Kimberly Harris took second in her heat and seventh overall (51.07); and current assistant Bailey Lear finished one spot behind Irby-Jackson with a 51.12 and was ninth in the first round. Butler and Irby Jackson, who both have the Olympic standard, along with the other two will run in Saturday's semifinal.
