Georgia shoots 11-under as a team on Friday
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — The No. 25-ranked Georgia women's golf team combined to shoot 11-under 565 in Friday's first two rounds of the FSU Match Up, putting the Bulldogs in third place among the 14-team field.
Four Georgia golfers are in top-20 positions on the individual leaderboard. Napat "Jenny" Lertsadwattana is tied for 10th at 5-under 139, Caterina Don is tied for 14th at 3-under 141, LoraLie Cowart is tied for 16th at 2-under 142 and Natachanok "Drive" Tunwannarux is tied for 19th at 1-under 143.
"It was a really good day of golf," head coach Josh Brewer said. "To have four players in the top 20 on the leaderboard and all of them have at least one, if not two, round under par is very solid."
Bulldogs notched three scores in the 60s, and six of eight counting tallies were par-or-better numbers on Friday.
"The course is scoreable, but you have to take advantage where you can," Brewer said. "We played the par-5s really well and today was a testament to our work on short game and wedges. We put shots in close, but you still have to get up and down. We did a good job of avoiding massive negative numbers. It's been a long three weeks, and we'll try to close this stretch with our best round of the spring tomorrow."
Georgia posted a 6-under 282 in the opening round and was third in the team field. The Bulldogs shot 5-under 283 on their second trip around the Seminole Legacy Golf Club layout.
In the first round, Cowart fired a 4-under 68, her third tally in the 60s during her last four rounds, and Lertsadwattana shot 3-under 69, her best effort of the season. Rounding out Georgia's counters were an even-par 72 by Caterina Don and a 74 from Natachanok "Drive" Tunwannarux.
Don's 69, her 17th par-or-better score in 27 rounds this season, paced Georgia in the afternoon. The Bulldogs also counted a pair of 2-under 70s from Lertsadwattana and Tunwannarux and a 74 from Cowart. Bernice Olivarez Ilas shot consecutive 75s on Friday and is tied for 49th.
No. 19 Duke blistered the course with a 24-under second round and is atop the leaderboard at 31-under. No. 20 Florida State is second at 17-under 559, and rounding out the are the Bulldogs at 565, Baylor at 267, Alabama and Nebraska at 576, No. 23 SMU at 578, Ohio State at 581, Indiana at 583 and Kansas at 590.
"Hat's off to Duke," Brewer said. "They had one of those rounds every team dreams of having. We'll chase them on the leaderboard tomorrow. It would obviously be hard to catch them and win, but being in the lead group tomorrow will be good for us."
Duke's Katie Li has the individual lead at 12-under, two shots better than Kelli Ann Stroud of Nebraska.
Georgia will be paired with Duke and FSU for Saturday's final round, teeing off in nine-minutes intervals between 9:50-10:26 am ET. Live scoring is available via golfstat.com.
