Georgia Drops Heartbreaker to Ohio State, 4-3, in ITA Indoor Championships First Round

February 09, 2024 | Women's Tennis

SEATTLE, Wash. — Despite leading early in the match, the No. 4-ranked Georgia women's tennis team fell in a heartbreaking 4-3 loss against No. 12 Ohio State in the first round of the ITA DI Women's National Team Indoor Championships at the Seattle Tennis Center on Friday.

The 7-seeded Bulldogs (2-3) opened the match with a dominant display in doubles competition. On court one, the No. 31 tandem of Aysegul Mert and Dasha Vidmanova jumped out to a brilliant start as they breezed past No. 24 Luciana Perry and Sydni Ratliff (Ohio State), 6-1.

Within five minutes, the No. 32 duo of Mai Nirundorn and Guillermina Grant helped clinch the doubles point for Georgia after knocking off Audrey Spencer and Irina Cantos Siemers (Ohio State) 6-1.

Leading 1-0 heading into singles action, Georgia doubled its lead after No. 114 Anastasiia Lopata swept Teah Chavez 6-3, 6-1 on court four. After Ohio State picked up a win on court four to cut the deficit to 2-1, Grant responded with a win on court six as she cruised past Spencer (Ohio State) 6-2, 6-3.

Not before long, the Buckeyes went on to pick up wins on courts three and five to level the match at 3-3, leaving only court two remaining in competition. Despite losing a tiebreaker in the first set, No. 38 Vidmanova battled from behind in the second to stay in the match, but ultimately fell to No. 123 Ratliff 7-6(3), 6-2.

Georgia will return to action at the ITA Indoor Championships on Saturday with an opponent and time to be determined in the consolation bracket following Friday's action.
