GUADALAJARA, Mexico — Led by a runner-up showing from fifth-year senior Caterina Don, the No. 30-ranked Georgia women's golf team tied for third in the Collegiate Invitational at Guadalajara Country Club on Saturday. Don wrapped up play at 2-under 214, two shots behind medalist Andrea Bergsdottir from Colorado State.
Don and Bergsdottir were tied entering the final round; however, Bergsdottir's hole-in-one at No. 15 proved to be the difference on the final leaderboard.
On the season, Don has now posted top-10 individual finishes in five of six tournaments, including back-to-back runner-up efforts in the first two events of the spring. She is a combined 17-under over 16 rounds, with 12 par-or-better tallies.
"Caterina has played great all season and that certainly continued this weekend," head coach Josh Brewer said. "If you look at it, she probably led for 50 or 52 holes this weekend. Obviously you wish she would have won, but her second-straight runner up finish is a very strong start to the spring. You'd like to see her break through and get a win because she's been consistently so close all season."
Georgia completed the 54-hold tournament tied for third at 29-over 893, 15 shots behind Florida State.
The Bulldogs played the second half of the second round on Saturday and finished that loop at 13-over 301. Don's 1-under 71 led Georgia, with additional counting scores of 74 by Savannah De Bock, 75 by LoraLie Cowart and 81 by Kate Song.
Georgia notched its low team round of the tournament in the final round, a 7-over 295 comprised of 73s from Cowart and Don and 74s from De Bock and Natachanok "Drive" Tunwannarux.
Overall, De Bock tied for 14th in her collegiate debut by shooting 8-over 224, Cowart tied for 19th at 226, Tunwannarux tied for 33rd at 230 and Song finished 62nd at 246. Bernice Olivarez Ilas, who competed individually, tied for 42nd at 232.
The Bulldogs will return to action in 10 days when they venture to California to compete in the San Diego State Classic at The Farms Golf Club in Rancho Sante Fe outside San Diego.
"We learned a lot," Brewer said. "This was really good experience for us. Savannah was solid in her debut and we had another freshman playing in just her second tournament. We'll take what we learned this weekend and work on a few things before we head to San Diego. It's a quick turn before our next event, but we know it's February and we have time to get a lot better throughout the rest of the spring."
