Bulldogs Set To Play Winner Of Notre Dame-Indiana In Allstate Sugar Bowl
December 08, 2024 | Football
ATHENS --- The second-ranked Georgia Bulldogs will play either seventh-ranked Notre Dame or eighth-ranked Indiana in the 91st annual Allstate Sugar Bowl as part of the College Football Playoff (CFP) Quarterfinal on Jan. 1, 2025, in the Caesars Superdome. ESPN will televise the matchup at 8:45 p.m. ET.
Â
Notre Dame (11-1) and Indiana (11-1, 8-1 Big Ten) will play in the CFP's first round in South Bend, Ind., on Dec. 20 at 8 p.m. on ABC and ESPN. The Bulldogs (11-2, 6-2 SEC) won their 15th Southeastern Conference title with a 22-19 overtime triumph over then second-ranked Texas on Dec. 7 in Atlanta to earn a first-round bye. Georgia, the No. 2 seed, will be making its 12th Sugar Bowl appearance.
Â
This season marks the first year of the new 12-team format for the CFP. The four highest-ranked conference champions, including Georgia, are seeded one through four and have received first-round byes. The other eight teams will play in the CFP first round with the higher seeds hosting the lower seeds on campus. Notre Dame is the No. 7 seed while IU is the No. 10 seed.
Â
The winner of this year's Sugar Bowl will advance to the CFP Semifinal at the Orange Bowl (Jan. 9 in Miami). This year's CFP National Championship will be Monday, Jan. 20, in Atlanta.
Â
Georgia has played Notre Dame three times and is 3-0 against the Irish including a 17-10 win in the 1981 Sugar Bowl to cap an undefeated national championship season under head coach Vince Dooley. Georgia is 2-0 against Notre Dame in the Kirby Smart era as the teams met in 2017 in South Bend and 2019 in Athens. The Bulldogs have never played Indiana.
"There is a tremendous amount of history (for Georgia at the Sugar Bowl)," said head coach Kirby Smart.  "I know -- as a early child, one of the first games that I remember actually seeing and watching back in the early '80s as a 5-, 6-year-old kid and Herschel Walker and the moments that happened in the Sugar Bowl. All the way through a lot of games that I've been a part of, whether it was Florida State-Georgia when I was a GA at Florida State; a lot of years at Alabama in the Sugar Bowl. I think my kids think their second home is the Sugar Bowl, because they spent a lot of time there. And they're very spoiled when it comes to playing in an electric atmosphere, big matchups, big games. The SEC has been paired with the Sugar Bowl for a long time. It's got a longstanding history, and Georgia does too."
Georgia has appeared in the Sugar Bowl 11 times and are 5-6:
   Jan. 1, 1947, Georgia 20, North Carolina 10
   Jan. 1, 1969, Arkansas 16, Georgia 2
   Jan. 1, 1977, Pittsburgh 27, Georgia 3
   Jan. 1, 1981, Georgia 17, Notre Dame 10
   Jan. 1, 1982, Pittsburgh 24, Georgia 20
   Jan. 1, 1983, Penn State 27, Georgia 23
   Jan. 1, 2003, Georgia 26, Florida State 13
   Jan. 3, 2006, West Virginia 38, Georgia 35
   Jan. 1, 2008, Georgia 41, Hawai'i 10
   Jan. 1, 2019, Texas 28, Georgia 21
   Jan. 1, 2020, Georgia 26, Baylor 14Â
This will be Georgia's 63rd bowl game appearance - second most of any team in the country. The Bulldogs' all-time bowl record is 38-21-3. Georgia is making its 28th consecutive bowl appearance, which ranks as the longest active streak in the country.
Currently, Georgia's senior class is a school record 53-4, which leads the FBS. The Bulldog seniors are also seeking their eighth postseason victory, a mark that already includes the CFP Semifinal Orange Bowl and CFP National Championship during the 2021 season, the SEC Championship Game, the CFP Semifinal Peach Bowl and the CFP National Championship in 2022, the 2023 Capital One Orange Bowl and the 2024 SEC Championship Game.
