ATHENS, Ga. —- Georgia's Asa Newell was named SEC Freshman of the Week by the league office in Birmingham, Ala., on Monday after averaging 13.5 points, 8.0 rebounds 1.5 blocks and 1.5 assists in the Bulldogs' wins over North Florida and Georgia Tech last week.
Newell, a 6-11, 220-pound freshman from Destin, Fla., scored 13 points, grabbed nine rebounds and blocked three shots last Tuesday against North Florida. The Ospreys arrived in Athens with a 3-0 record that included road wins at South Carolina and Georgia Tech. Newell's three-block outing came after a four-block performance last Sunday against Texas Southern, making him the first Bulldog with 3-plus rejections in back-to-back games since Nicolas Claxton in 2019.
Newell then put up 14 points and collected a team-leading seven rebounds against Georgia's arch-rival in Atlanta on Friday night. He scored half of Georgia's points in a 14-0 second-half surge that turned a three-point deficit with 12:25 remaining into an 11-point lead at the 7:23 mark.
Newell is one of two Bulldogs – along with Dakota Leffew – to post double-figure scoring tallies in each of the first four games of the season. Among the SEC's statistical leaders, he entered this week ranked No. 9 in scoring (16.8 ppg), No. 9 in rebounding (7.8 rpg) and No. 4 in blocked shots (2.5 bpg).
Newell joins a list of nine other Bulldogs who have earned SEC Freshman of the Week honors a combined 14 times since the award's inception in 1988.
Georgia is 4-0 on the season and returns to action tomorrow night when the Bulldogs host Alabama A&M at 7:00 p.m. Georgia is looking to extend its 21-game winning streak against non-conference opponents at Stegeman Coliseum.
