Catching Up With JT Quinn

October 24, 2024 | Baseball

JT Quinn knows what Southeastern Conference baseball is all about. A 6-6, 214-pound right-hander from Tampa, Fla., he spent his first two seasons playing in Oxford, Miss., for the Ole Miss Rebels. The Rebels went 25-29 and 27-29 during that time after winning the College World Series in 2022. He appeared in 25 games with 15 starts, going 4-6. In 70.2 innings, he registered 86 strikeouts.

Now with a fresh start in Athens, Quinn said he is ready to help the Bulldogs make a deeper run in the postseason in 2025.

What are your most memorable moments and lessons that you learned during your Ole Miss career?
"The people there were the most memorable. I think the coaches and everyone there taught me a lot of lessons, and I thought it was good for my development and my mental space, and especially now coming here. I think it's just helped a lot."

What are your goals are for this season?
"I'd say winning. That's the biggest thing that I've been missing out on personally, and that's something that I want to get done here. Obviously, last year was a huge step for UGA and something that we want to build on. We went 6-24 in the SEC in my first year at Ole Miss and then 11-19 last year. Well, this year will be different."

What made you choose UGA to continue your career?
"When I was talking to (head coach) Wes (Johnson), it was kind of a no-brainer for me. He's just obviously such a genius when it comes to pitching, and there's nothing really like him."

How has the transition been from high school to college and now to UGA?
"I think the transition from high school to college is much harder. As far as Ole Miss to Georgia, it's the SEC, so I know what the schedule is and what to expect."

Your dad Tom played SEC baseball so how has his experiences influenced you?
"He knows a lot, especially the mental side of pitching, so he helps me with that. He played under Coach (Ron) Polk at Mississippi State for a few years, so he got to learn a lot from him and now has taught me a lot of that too."

Outside of baseball, what hobbies and interests do you have?
"I'd say a lot of golf. Not a lot else. I do like hanging with my friends too."

Do you have a favorite spot in Athens?
"My house is pretty much the spot. There's a bunch of people that come through there and just hang out. It's kind of like the hangout spot."

How do you balance athletics and academics?
"It's difficult. It's super time-consuming, but, you know, it's just something that you must get used to and you just have to get your work done."

What is your mindset as you prepare to pitch?
"It's the same thing as every game where you got to keep your mind and your head on straight and focus on what you need to focus on to execute pitches."

If you could have a table for four with three MLB players to have dinner with, who would you invite?
"Max Scherzer's one, then Justin Verlander and Shohei Ohtani with his interpreter."
