ATHENS, Ga. – University of Georgia senior midfielder Ellie Gilbert has been named to the 2024 Southeastern Conference Community Service Team, as announced by the league office Wednesday afternoon.
Throughout her four years in Athens, Gilbert has served her community in a variety of ways. This spring, the Atlanta native worked with Feed My Starving Children, helping to provide 38,880 meals to 106 children in the Athens-Clarke County area. She also participated in Girl Power Day, volunteering to coach young girls and help inspire them to pursue their dreams of competing in collegiate sports. For two seasons, she has spearheaded Georgia soccer's relationship with Extra Special People, working with individuals with developmental disabilities and inviting them into the program. Gilbert has also worked with the Athens Humane Society as an assistant working with homeless animals, as well as volunteering with Hometown Heroes and the Atlanta YMCA's food packaging efforts.
Gilbert, a Sport Management major, has served as a team captain for each of the past two seasons and is also the co-vice president of the university's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. In her role, she prepares and organizes committee meetings, serves as a liaison between student-athletes and administration, and heads the intra-team relationship building subcommittee. She was also inducted into the Georgia Way L.E.A.D. Academy in fall 2022, a student-athlete leadership training group hand-selected by athletic administrators. Additionally, she has served as a counselor and coach for the Georgia Soccer Camps each of the past two summers.
On the field, Gilbert has appeared in 71 matches with 61 starts, scoring four goals and assisting on two others. She ranks second among active players in starts (61) and minutes (5,240). Prior to a season-ending knee injury late last season, she had started 43 consecutive matches before recovering in time to start the season opener against Pitt.
Gilbert and her Georgia teammates face No. 13 Auburn in their SEC road finale Thursday at 7:30 p.m. EDT on SEC Network+.
