ATHENS, Ga. – For their performances against South Carolina, University of Georgia redshirt senior Luca Urlando and freshman Drew Hitchcock received Southeastern Conference weekly honors Tuesday afternoon, as announced by the league office.
Urlando was named SEC Men's Swimmer of the Week after posting a dominant return to collegiate swimming last Friday, helping No. 8 Georgia secure its season-opening win over South Carolina. In the 100y butterfly, Urlando prevailed with an A-cut time of 44.16, the second-fastest time in program history behind his school-record of 43.80 he set at the 2022 NCAA Championships and the nation's fastest this season. Earlier, the Sacramento, California native picked up an automatic cut in the 200y butterfly with a time of 1:39.87, winning by over four seconds with the fifth-fastest mark in school history. He now holds the top five 200 fly times in program history.
Urlando also joined two victorious relays, leading off the 200y medley relay with a 21.09 split, the fourth-fastest time nationally, and posting a 41.84 split in the 400y freestyle relay. This is Urlando's third career SEC Swimmer of the Week honor, following two accolades during the 2021-22 season.
Hitchock turned in an impressive debut during the Bulldogs' victory, touching first in the 200y individual medley with a time of 1:46.51. Earlier in the meet, the Hickory, North Carolina native finished third in the 200y butterfly with a B-cut time of 1:44.04 and placed fourth in the 100y butterfly at 47.44.
Urlando, Hitchock, and the rest of the Georgia swimming and diving teams return to action this Saturday at Florida State. The meet is set to begin at 11 a.m. in Tallahassee.
