Vernis’ PK Lifts Georgia Over Georgia Southern, 1-0

September 07, 2023 | Soccer

STATESBORO, Ga. – With only an early penalty make needed, the University of Georgia soccer team bested Georgia Southern, 1-0, Thursday evening at Eagle Field at Erk Park.

Redshirt senior midfielder Nicole Vernis led Georgia (3-1-1) with a career-high seven shots, including five on frame and the Bulldogs' lone goal. Redshirt freshman Summer Denigan added in four shots and senior defender Madison Haugen tallied three, while sophomore goalkeeper Jordan Brown notched five saves for Georgia's third-consecutive shutout.

After a quiet opening segment with only one Georgia shot, freshman midfielder Christian Brathwaite became entangled with Georgia Southern (4-2-0) defender Smith Cathey and drew a foul within the box. Moments later, Vernis calmly converted the penalty for her first career goal with the Bulldogs.

As the half continued, the Bulldogs' attack became more pronounced, including a rocket from Haugen that was barely handled by Eagles keeper Quinn Wilson. Georgia Southern found itself with a terrific opportunity with a breakaway in the 39th minute, but the cross went too far for the finish. A few minutes later, Georgia goalkeeper Jordan Brown was assessed a yellow card, allowing for a Georgia Southern free kick. The Eagles' kick hit off the crossbar before the rebound was collected by a diving Brown, maintaining the lead.

Georgia maintained its offensive intensity in the early second half, attempting three quick shots, including another close call for Haugen. Following a yellow card on graduate forward Hannah White, Denigan nearly extended the lead, but Wilson made the save. By the 75th minute, the Bulldogs had built an 8-1 shot advantage for the period as the rain started to fall at Eagle Field. In the closing moments, Georgia continued to press while negating Georgia Southern's final series of possessions.

Georgia returns home to face No. 9 Clemson on Sunday, Sept. 10 at 6 p.m. at the Turner Soccer Complex. Admission is free and the match will air live on SEC Network.
