Productive First Day at 55th Southern Intercollegiates

ATHENS, Ga. – The University of Georgia men's tennis team recorded a 7-1 record in singles and tallied five doubles victories Friday to begin the 2023 Southern Intercollegiate Championships at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
"We had a very productive day," head coach Manuel Diaz said. "We could have played better doubles, especially in the first round. We raised our game in the second round, as we are still trying some different combinations. We had a good day in singles. Many of our freshmen had to deal with some nerves early in their singles matches, but we did a great job playing through that in most cases. I am looking for improvements from all our guys tomorrow."
Georgia's tandem of Ryan Colby and Niels Ratiu landed in the finals of the red doubles draw with a pair of wins, taking down Charlotte's Coy Simon and Brett Glorida, 8-2, before ousting UNCW's Reece Falck and Jonathan Baron, 8-7 (4). Colby and Ratiu will face Clemson's Noa Vukadin and Maxwell Smith in Sunday's doubles finals.
Parker Jacques and Thomas Paulsell looked strong on the doubles courts with an 8-5 win against Vanderbilt's Mitchell Deames and Paul Wang. Jacques then teamed with fellow freshman Davis Taylor for an 8-7 (5) win against their Georgia Tech counterparts Robert Bauer and Owen DeMuth.
Following two rounds of doubles, singles action started after a brief lunch break.
The Bulldogs were outstanding on the singles courts, with seven wins. Niels Ratiu, Miguel Perez Peña, Thomas Paulsell and Ryan Colby all advanced to the quarterfinals of the red draw, while Cyrus Mahjoob, and Davis Taylor advanced to the quarterfinals of the black flight.
For Taylor and Ratiu, it marks the first victories of their young Bulldog careers. Freshman teammate Parker Mariencheck recorded his second win of the season in a three-set battle against UNCW's Andrew Broadsteer.
Action resumes Saturday at 9 a.m. with two rounds of singles.
