Georgia Women Earn Second Win in Split at Arizona State

TEMPE, Ariz. – Boosted by numerous B-cuts and a pair of top-10 program times, the University of Georgia women's swimming and diving team earned a second win against Arizona State Saturday morning in short-course competition at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center.

The Georgia women improved to 2-0 on the season with a strong performance, winning 12 overall events and posting top times in two exhibition events. The Bulldogs' distance group continued to excel, turning in top-three sweeps in both the 500 and 1,000-yard freestyle races. In the 1,000y free, junior Duné Coetzee prevailed with a personal-best time of 9:35.69, making her the fifth-fastest performer in program history. Fellow junior Rachel Stege also posted a PR of 9:37.37, moving up to seventh-all time, while junior Abby McCulloh rounded out the sweep with a third-place time of 9:40.49. Later in the 500, Stege touched first at 4:43.31, with the junior trio all earning B-cuts in the process.
 
After earning two wins on Friday, fifth-year Zoie Hartman swept the breaststroke events with B-cut times in each win. Hartman took first in the 100 with a time of 1:01.13, followed by a cut of 2:11.67 in the 200. Hartman also joined junior Eboni McCarty, sophomore Emma Norton, and freshman Helena Jones to win the 200y medley relay at 1:38.77. In their individual races, McCarty was victorious in the 100y backstroke with a B-cut of 52.60, Jones took the 50y freestyle at 22.68, and Norton won the 100y butterfly with a time of 54.03.
 
Senior Sloane Reinstein also notched two wins in the meet, leading a 1-2-3 sweep in the 200y freestyle with a B-cut time of 1:46.35, followed by a winning time of 49.49 in the 100y freestyle. Additionally, graduate Millie Sansome took first in the 200y backstroke with a time of 1:57.23. At the diving well, senior Meghan Wenzel earned her second-straight win, topping the 1-meter springboard with a Zone cut of 295.35. Sophomore Hannah Stumpf finished third with a mark of 242.78, while freshman Michelle Cummo placed sixth at 213.68.

In the men's meet, the Bulldogs picked up four wins, led by a sweep of the 100y backstroke, with graduate Bradley Dunham (45.56) and sophomore Ruard van Renen (45.94) each posting B-cut times. The Bulldogs prevailed in both backstroke events as fifth-year Ian Grum won the 200y backstroke with a B-cut time of 1:41.25. Grum also picked up a B-cut in the 200y butterfly, finishing second at 1:45.05. Earlier, Georgia took the top two spots in the 1,000y freestyle as sophomore Sam Powe dropped a personal-best time of 9:06.93, followed by senior Jake Magahey in second at 9:08.45. Magahey went on to win the 500y freestyle with a B-cut of 4:19.82, followed by Dunham in second with a B-cut of 4:20.93.
 
In the 100y freestyle, fifth-year Zach Hils placed third with a B-cut time of 43.34. Hils joined van Runen, Dunham, and junior Reese Branzell to finish third in the opening 200y medley relay with a time of 1:26.07. The same group also placed third in the 400y freestyle relay with a time of 2:53.93. At the diving well, a pair of Bulldogs earned Zone cuts on the 1-meter springboard. Freshman Matthew Bray finished second with a score of 306.00, followed by junior Allen Mann in third with a qualifying mark of 304.95. Junior Nolan Lewis just missed earning a cut himself with a fourth-place 297.00, while fellow junior Rhett Hopkins finished sixth at 275.33.

Georgia opens its home season with a matchup against in-state rival Georgia Tech on Wednesday, Oct. 11 at 5 p.m. at Gabrielsen Natatorium.
