September 11, 2023 | Men's Golf
SAN ANTONIO, Texas — The University of Georgia men's golf team capped off its first tournament of the season in eighth place with a score of 11-over par, as sophomore Carter Loflin earned his first top-five finish of his Bulldog career at the Valero Texas Collegiate at TPC San Antonio Oaks on Monday.
Loflin and junior Buck Brumlow finished in the top-10 of the player leaderboard, with Loflin ending four-under par and tied for fifth while Brumlow finished the tournament two-under and tied for 10th. This marks the first top-five finish in Loflin's collegiate career and Burmlow's fourth time placing within the top-10. The team shot 298-287-290 for an 875 total.
Vanderbilt won the tournament after shooting 11-under during the third round, finishing with a score of 12-under. TCU finished in second with a score of seven-under after going three-under on the final day, while Baylor earned third place by shooting four-under.
"Both Carter and Buck played really well," head coach Chris Haack said. "Even though we didn't have the finish we'd like to see, we made a lot of birdies and showed flashes of high-level play. We'll need to clean up some bogeys and double bogeys, but all in all, it was nice to see all these guys in action. I'm especially proud of Carter and Buck on a great finish."
Loflin began with bogeys on holes one and four but would not finish another hole over par for the remainder of the tournament. The Duluth native finished the third round with seven birdies over the last 14 holes to move up 13 spots on the player leaderboard and finish tied for fifth with two other golfers. This is his best finish at an event since shooting eight-under at the Ka'anapali Classic last season, where he finished in 10th.
The team started the day on the back nine, where senior Caleb Manuel had an impressive start, shooting four-under with an eagle on the 14th hole to close out the first half of the final day. Manuel finished the tournament five-over 221 to tie for 33rd overall. Graduate Ben van Wyk also finished in 33rd place on the leaderboard, shooting four-over on Monday to finish five-over 221 as well.
Brumlow started the day slowly with three bogeys on the back nine but managed to stay just one-over headed to the first hole thanks to birdies on holes 11 and 13. The Cartersville native finished the day smoothly, shooting par-or-better on all the final nine holes to finish the tournament tied for 10th place at two-under 214.
Graduate Connor Creasy finished the Valero Texas Collegiate with his best outing, shooting one-under 71 to finish with a three-day final of 73-78-71 six-over 222. He ended the event shooting par-or-better on his last six holes with three birdies. Graduate Beck Burnette's first tournament as a Bulldog saw him with a score of 13-over 229.
The Valero Texas Collegiate marked the first of four fall tournaments for Georgia. The team will next play in the SEC Match Play Championship at the Birmingham Country Club on Sept. 25-27. Georgia will then round out 2023 playing in the Ben Hogan Collegiate hosted by TCU on Oct. 2-3 and at the Ka'anapali Collegiate Classic hosted by Hawaii on Oct. 26-28.
