MANILA, Philippines — Despite a team-high 24-point performance from former Georgia Bulldog Anthony Edwards, the USA National Team lost 127-118 to Canada in overtime in the Bronze Medal game of the FIBA World Cup on Sunday morning.
Edwards' output made him just the third American to record four 20-point performances in World Cup competition, joining Kevin Durant and Paul Pierce. The Atlanta native paced the Americans offensively in five of eight games in Manila. He finished as the USA's leading scorer at 18.9 points per game, second-leading rebounder at 4.6 boards per contest and also led the team in playing time at 26.0 minutes per outing.
After trailing 91-82 through three quarters, the USA outscored Canada 29-20 over the final 10 minutes and forced overtime on a buzzer-beating 3-pointer by Mikel Bridges. The Canadians scored the first five points of OT, and the USA never pulled within a possession thereafter.
Edwards connected on 9-of-20 shots from the field and 5-of-8 free throws in the game, while also contributing five rebounds, three assists, one steal and one block in 37 minutes of action.
In his one season at Georgia in 2019-20, Edwards averaged 19.1 points per game, leading the Bulldogs and and all freshmen nationally in scoring. His 610 total points ranks No. 7 all-time among Georgia's single-season scoring leaders and No. 10 on the ledger of most points ever by an SEC freshman.
Edwards became the No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft when he was selected by Minnesota. He has scored 4,871 points in three seasons with the Timberwolves, the fourth-most in NBA history for a player before his 22nd birthday behind only LeBron James, Kevin Durant and Carmelo Anthony. Edwards led Minnesota to consecutive playoff appearances in 2022 and 2023 and was an NBA All-Star in 2023.
The FIBA World Cup, formerly known at the World Championships, is contested every four years. The tournament is considered the flagship event of FIBA, the international governing body of basketball. With the USA's performance at this year's World Cup, the Americans locked up a qualifying spot for next summer's Olympic Games in Paris.
