August 24, 2023 | Men's Tennis
ATHENS, Ga. — Six fall tournaments, 11 home matches, including contests against Texas and Wake Forest in Athens, and a strong non-conference slate highlight the men's tennis team's 2023-24 schedule, head coach Manuel Diaz announced Thursday afternoon.
The Bulldogs will begin the year in its first fall event at the Texas Invitational in Austin on Sept. 22-24. The team competed against the Longhorns in both the fall and spring seasons last year.
Following the team's trip to the Lonestar state, Georgia will compete in five additional events during the fall semester, including hosting the 56th annual Southern Intercollegiate Championships on Sept. 29-Oct. 1. Ethan Quinn won the singles championship while Blake Croyder and Britton Johnston won the doubles title at last year's event.
Georgia will then participate in the ITA Southeast Regional on Oct. 12-16 and conclude the calendar year at the Georgia Tech Invitational, both of which will be played at the Yellowjackets' campus in Atlanta.
The Intercollegiate Tennis Association Fall Nationals will again be held in San Diego, Calif., on Nov. 1-5. Players qualify for the event by reaching the finals of singles or doubles draw at the ITA All-American Championships on Oct. 2-8 or at the ITA Regional event.
Georgia will begin 2024 at the Gamecock Invitational in Columbia, S.C., on Jan. 5-7. The team's first dual matches of the season will be played at the Magill Tennis Complex on Jan. 28 and 29 during the annual ITA Kickoff Weekend. The Bulldogs will play Louisiana on Sunday and either Auburn or Texas A&M on Monday. The team will then host rival Georgia Tech on Feb. 6 and look to win its 13th-straight match against the Yellow Jackets.
Georgia will play its first two road matches before the ITA National Team Indoors Championships, going to Charlottesville, Va. to take on the defending national champions Virginia on Feb. 9 and then to Chapel Hill, N.C. to compete against North Carolina on Feb. 11. Should the Bulldogs qualify for the ITA National Team Indoors, they will play three matches at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York City, hosted by Columbia, from Feb. 16-19.
The Bulldogs will host Wake Forest on Feb. 26 ahead of starting its Southeastern Conference schedule. Georgia's 12-match Southeastern Conference slate will feature home contests against Alabama, Auburn, LSU, Arkansas, South Carolina and Florida, with road matches coming against Tennessee, Mississippi State, Texas A&M, Ole Miss, Kentucky and Vanderbilt. Texas will come to visit the Home of Collegiate Tennis during the SEC portion of the schedule on March 14.
This year's SEC Championships will be held at the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Complex in Lexington, Ky., with the Kentucky Wildcats serving as the host. The NCAA Championships will conclude the season in May, with the quarterfinals and onward being played at the final site of Stillwater, Okla.
The Bulldogs will feature a bevy of newcomers for the 2023-24 season, with five incoming freshmen and USC transfer Ryan Colby. Juniors Miguel Perez Peña and Thomas Paulsell as well as redshirt sophomore Filipe Costa are the three student-athletes returning who were on the roster for the 2023 SEC regular season champions.
