Bulldogs Ninth After Opening Round of NCAAs

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Led by an even-par 70 from junior Caleb Manuel, the University of Georgia men's golf team carded a 5-over-par 285 on Friday to sit tied for ninth following the opening round of the NCAA Championship at Grayhawk Golf Club.
The 30-team field features 20 teams that are ranked in the Bushnell/Golfweek Division I Coaches poll. Georgia Tech holds the 18-hole team lead after firing an even-par 280. Arkansas and Pepperdine are tied for second at 1-over-par 281, while North Carolina, Texas Tech and Vanderbilt are tied for fourth at 2-over-par 282. Georgia Tech's Ross Steelman holds the 18-hole individual lead after shooting a bogey free opening round of 6-under-par 64.
Manuel paced the Bulldog with a round of even-par 70 and is tied for 19th. He was followed by senior Ben van Wyk and sophomore Maxwell Ford who both carded rounds of 1-over-par 71 (31st), while senior Connor Creasy fired a round of 3-over-par 73 (70th). Sophomore Buck Brumlow rounded out the Bulldogs with an opening round of 4-over-par 74 (87th).
