Georgia’s Hummer Wins Young Achievement Award
May 11, 2023 | General
ATHENS, Ga. – Brandon Hummer, associate director of athletic performance at the University of Georgia, has been named the winner of the 2023 Gatorade Young Achievement Award, it was announced earlier this week.
Instituted in 2017, this honor recognizes one outstanding up-and-coming strength and conditioning coach from a large pool of nationwide candidates.
"I am very appreciative of the staff that I get to learn from and, most importantly, the teams and athletes I work with daily," Hummer said. "The student-athletes that I train are the ones putting in the work in the weight room, practice, and competition. I am lucky to be back at UGA as the different technology available to aid in year-round programming for the student-athletes has helped me become a better coach. I am also thankful for the sport coaches that have integrated me into their teams. I am very happy and thankful to be a DAWG!"
Hummer currently works with Georgia's gymnastics, softball, and men's and women's golf programs. He started as an intern in the UGA Athletic Performance Office in 2014, before moving up to paid intern to graduate assistant and then eventually his first full-time position at Boston College.
Following his stint at BC, Hummer worked at the University of Virginia, where he helped the men's lacrosse team win the 2019 national championship.
In 2020, he returned to Athens to work primarily with Georgia's Olympic sports programs.
"We are fortunate that Brandon decided to return to Athens and rejoined our staff in 2020 as a full-time staff member," said Katrin Koch, director of athletic performance for Olympic sports." Brandon is a truly exceptional strength and conditioning coach. He is not just someone who makes our student-athletes lift more weight or run faster, but rather a mentor who inspires and empowers them to become the best version of themselves, both physically and mentally. He is a powerful role model, and I am thrilled that our national governing body recognizes what an asset Brandon is to the UGA Athletic Association. This award gives him the well-deserved recognition that he would typically deflect to his student athletes and sport coaches. Thanks Brandon- you are a DGD!"
Under his guidance, his teams have experienced remarkable success at Georgia, including the men's tennis team's SEC title in 2016, softball's trip to the Women's College World Series in 2021 and its current run to second place in the conference standings. Hummer also helped women's golf to a NCAA regional title in 2021 and this season. In 2021, Hummer worked with the UGA men's golf team that finished 17th at NCAAs.
In addition, he consistently promotes student-athletes through various platforms, including social media spotlights, while playing a pivotal role in their development both on and off the field of competition.
