Filipe Costa Named to SEC Community Service Team

April 13, 2023 | Men's Tennis

ATHENS, Ga. – University of Georgia men's tennis redshirt freshman Filipe Costa has been named to the 2023 Southeastern Conference Community Service Team, the league office announced on Thursday afternoon.

The SEC Community Service Team is meant to highlight student-athletes whose accomplishments exceed the results on the courts or grades in the classrooms. The SEC sponsors Community Service Teams in all 21 of its varsity sports to recognize those who use their free time to improve the lives of others.

Costa has been a shining example of a student athlete that tries to inspire the next generation of athletes through giving back and making a difference in the lives of others. During his junior and senior years of high school, Costa did volunteer based coaching as an assistant coach for the local high school tennis team in Roswell.

Costa also started his own social media accounts, @CostaTennisAcademy, to create an online platform to help educate the next generation on tennis basic and foundations from a scientific and practical standpoint. He started this because he saw a gap in how athletes thought about tennis training, doing things mindlessly without much reasoning behind their why. Knowing that private coaching can be expensive, he wanted to provide a platform behind the physics of why things work from a trustworthy source, being a Division I athlete at the SEC level, without having the financial barrier. He wanted to provide the most information possible and a high-level knowledge base to athletes free of charge.

Costa also helped to lead a group of teammates to read to a local elementary school, Howard B. Stroud Elementary School. He did this to help give back to the community and invest back into the youth that supports the team.

His family has been involved in BarkVille Dog Rescue, taking in foster dogs that were in tough conditions and helping to nurse them back to full health until they find their forever homes. The Costa family has been involved with the organization for over three years now.

Prior to transferring to Georgia, Costa was named to the Dean's List for both semesters his true freshman year at Arizona State and was a Presidential Scholarship recipient.

As a junior, Costa was a blue-chip recruit coming out of high school and peaked as the No. 4 player in his class and the top-ranked player in the state of Georgia according to tennis recruiting.net. He accumulated 100 career wins in his time in juniors winning multiple championships at multiple USTA events. Costa also spent time in England growing up, reaching No. 7 in the LTA junior rankings, finishing as a finalist for both doubles and singles on the Tennis Europe Circuit.

The Bulldogs will close out their regular season this week, beginning with No. 12 Mississippi State on Thursday at 9 a.m. ET and then celebrate senior day against No. 25 Ole Miss on Saturday at 1 p.m. with ceremonies beginning around 12:50 p.m. Georgia will finish conference play undefeated for the first time since 2016 if it wins its final two matches.
