Bulldogs Climb To Third At Clover Cup

Bae, Don & Mahé all tied for ninth individually

MESA, Ariz. — Led by a trio of Bulldogs in the top 10 on the individual leaderboard, the Georgia women's golf team ascended to third in the team field during Saturday's second round of the Clover Cup.
Jenny Bae, Caterina Don and Candice Mahé all are tied for ninth at Longbow Golf Club. The Bulldogs' 290 put them at 3-over 579 through 36 holes. No. 10 Texas A&M expanded its lead to 10 strokes with an 11-under effort in the second round.
"It's nice having a couple of people break par and be in the red," head coach Josh Brewer said. "We know that we have a couple of others who are very capable of shooting those scores too. We'll use tomorrow to become more confident and look for everyone to play better."
On Saturday, the Bulldogs counted a 2-under 70 from Bae, a 1-under 71 from Mahé, a 73 from Don and a 76 from Céleste Dao.
Bae, Don and Mahé all are at 2-under 142, five shots off the lead. In addition to the top-10 Bulldogs', LoraLie Cowart, who is competing individually, shot 75 and is tied for 33rd at 151, Dao is tied for 44th at 153 and Caroline Craig is tied for 66th at 160.
Bae mixed 12 pars with four birdies and two bogey en route to her 17th par-or-better score in 23 rounds this season. She turned at 2-under after birdies at No. 8 and No. 9. Bae bogeyed No. 10, but regained that stroke with a birdie at No. 12. Following a bogey at No. 17, she closed with a birdie at No. 18.
Mahé battled for second consecutive 71. She double-bogeyed No. 1 but bounced back to birdie No. 4, No. 5 and No. 9 to get into the red at the turn. She was even on the back side, with a bogey at No. 10 and a birdie at No. 15.
The Aggies are at 16-under 560, 10 shots ahead of New Mexico. After the Bulldogs in third at 579, Clemson is at 581, Tennessee is at 588, Colorado State is at 593, Louisville is at 598, Florida International is at 599, Indiana is at 605 and Northern Illinois is at 608.
Angela Arora of Tennessee broke free of a seven-way tie for first with a 68. She is at 7-under 137, two shots ahead of Zoe Slaughter of Texas A&M.
The Bulldogs will play with Aggies and Lobos on Sunday. A 10:00 a.m. ET shotgun start will begin with Georgia on holes No. 17, No. 18 and No. 1. Live scoring will be available throughout the tournament at golfstat.com.
"We always want to be in the final group on the final day," Brewer said. "It will be difficult to win (the tournament) tomorrow but at the same time, we could win tomorrow among the top teams in the field. We just need clean a few things up and have our best day of the week tomorrow and continue to improve as the most important part of our season is right in front of us."
