Georgia Falls to TCU at ITA Indoor Quarterfinals

February 18, 2023 | Men's Tennis

CHICAGO – The No. 11 seed University of Georgia men's tennis team fell to No. 3 seed TCU by a 5-0 result on Saturday morning in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Team Indoor Championship quarterfinals at the XS Tennis Center.

Georgia (5-5) will move into the consolation bracket and face the loser of No. 2 Kentucky and No. 7 USC tomorrow with the time to be announced. This was the Bulldogs' first appearance in the quarterfinals of the event since 2018.

The Bulldogs' lone win against TCU (9-0) came in doubles, where No. 24 Trent Bryde and Ethan Quinn earned their fourth win on the top court together over Jake Fearnley and Luc Fomba in a 7-6(3) finish. Georgia moved to 8-2 all-time against the Horned Frogs with the match loss.

"I'm very proud of our guys, we fought very well today," said head coach Manny Diaz. "TCU is a great team. We were right there with them in all three doubles and all six singles but came up just a little bit short. It was a very competitive match that helped the team get better today. As always, when you lose, you learn. We went over some things that we need to get better at with our guys, and we will. A great opportunity awaits for us tomorrow, regardless of who we play, and it's something we're looking forward to."

All three matches in doubles competition went the distance, with court one going Georgia's way in a breaker while both two and three finished in a 7-5 result in TCU's favor. The Horned Frogs' Sebastian Gorzny and Pedro Vives opened dubs with a 7-5 victory over Croyder and Johnston, their fourth loss of the season on court three.

On court one, No. 24 Bryde and Quinn managed to take the tiebreaker and earn their eighth win of the year together by a 7-6(3) result, which put the deciding match on court two. Sander Jong and Jack Pinnington Jones would pick up the win over Giusca and Henning to clinch the doubles point, giving TCU a 1-0 match lead.

The Bulldogs continued to fight in singles, where three first sets went into breakers with another going to a 7-5 finish.

Sander Jong extended the TCU match lead after a win over No. 62 Croyder on court four in straight sets, putting the Georgia redshirt senior at 15-10 this season. After forcing a breaker in the first set, No. 5 Quinn was defeated by No. 17 Jake Fearnley 7-6(1), 6-3. The Horned Frogs would earn match point with the pair of singles wins.

Despite the circumstances, the Bulldogs were still fighting on the remaining courts, where No. 8 Henning forced a third set, No. 87 Bryde and Giusca were close in the second sets and Miguel Perez Peña had won a breaker in the first. TCU would clinch the win after No. 87 Bryde and Giusca were defeated simultaneously, which resulted in a 5-0 match score.

All matches will be broadcasted exclusively on the Cracked Racquets YouTube channel, while individual match streams can be found on Track Tennis. For more information, visit the ITA Tournament Central page.
